Exhibit Design Intern information

What does an exhibit design intern do?

An Exhibit Design Intern assists with the planning, design, and installation of exhibits in museums, galleries, or trade shows. Their duties often include creating design concepts, producing digital or physical mock-ups, sourcing materials, and collaborating with curators and other designers. Interns gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools, while learning about visitor engagement and storytelling through spatial design. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in exhibition design, architecture, or related fields.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an exhibit design intern?

As an Exhibit Design Intern, you will typically assist with concept development, drafting floor plans, creating 3D models, and preparing presentation materials for exhibitions. You may collaborate closely with senior designers, curators, and fabricators to translate ideas into tangible layouts and visitor experiences. Interns often gain hands-on experience with design software and may participate in team meetings, client presentations, or installation processes. This role offers a well-rounded introduction to the day-to-day workflow of exhibit design, allowing you to build both technical and collaborative skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an exhibit design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exhibit Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, spatial planning, and often a background in graphic or interior design, typically supported by coursework or a related degree in design or architecture. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, AutoCAD, and 3D rendering tools is highly valuable. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help you generate compelling ideas and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that exhibits are visually engaging, functional, and meet both client and visitor needs.
