POSITION DETAILS:
Job Title: Certified Personal Trainer
Status: Part Time Non-Exempt
Department: Wellness
Reports to: Director of Healthy Living


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Personal Trainer plays a vital role in advancing the YMCA's mission of strengthening community by connecting people to their potential, purpose, and one another. This position delivers high-quality, personalized wellness experiences that inspire achievement and improve health. By coaching proper techniques, offering encouragement, and supporting individuals of all fitness levels, the trainer creates a safe and motivating environment for growth. Guided by the YMCA's core values-Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility-we foster a culture that is Welcoming, Genuine, Hopeful, Nurturing, and Determined.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead safe, energizing, and goal-focused one-on-one or small group personal training sessions.
  2. Build strong, authentic relationships with clients while promoting positive self-image and motivation.
  3. Coach proper biomechanics, form, and technique tailored to individual needs and goals.
  4. Track client progress, including attendance, workouts, goals, and milestones.
  5. Celebrate client achievements and create a positive, empowering experience.
  6. Respond to participant questions and adjust sessions based on individual capabilities or limitations.
  7. Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming wellness environment.
  8. Stay informed on current fitness trends, exercise science, and best practices.
  9. Communicate effectively with members, staff, and supervisors regarding client needs and program feedback.
  10. Uphold YMCA policies and represent the organization with professionalism, integrity, and respect.
  11. Model YMCA core values and use the Y-Voice: Welcoming, Hopeful, Determined, Genuine, and Nurturing.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the YMCA's mission and strategic goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Nationally recognized personal training certification (e.g., ACE, NASM, AFAA, NETA) required.
  • Previous experience training clients one-on-one preferred.
  • Certification in Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting and Emergency Procedures (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with people of all ages and fitness levels.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to health and wellness.
  • Understands that the YMCA is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).


REQUIRED TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS (or willingness to obtain upon hire):

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training (or equivalent approved by the YMCA)
  • Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Certification
  • Emergency Procedures Training
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Personal Training Certification (ACE, NASM, AFAA, NETA, or similar)


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to demonstrate and lead exercises, including strength, cardio, and flexibility movements.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. using proper technique.
  • Requires standing, bending, and movement for extended periods.
  • Ability to engage safely and energetically with clients in fitness spaces.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the
    essential functions.
