Exercise Science Student Internship information

What is an exercise science student internship?

An Exercise Science Student Internship is a supervised work experience program designed for students pursuing a degree in exercise science or a related field. Interns gain hands-on experience by working in settings such as fitness centers, rehabilitation clinics, sports teams, or wellness programs. The internship allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations while developing professional skills, networking with industry professionals, and exploring potential career paths. These internships may be required for graduation and can vary in length and responsibilities depending on the host organization.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities during an exercise science student internship?

During an Exercise Science Student Internship, interns typically assist with fitness assessments, help design and implement exercise programs, and observe or support client training sessions. They may also be involved with data collection, research projects, or administrative tasks related to facility operations. Interns often learn practical skills such as exercise testing, client communication, and program modification, and gain exposure to working alongside certified trainers, physical therapists, or exercise physiologists. This hands-on experience is valuable for applying classroom knowledge to real-world settings and building a professional network in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an exercise science student intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exercise Science Student Intern, you need a foundational understanding of anatomy, physiology, and exercise principles, often gained through academic coursework in exercise science or kinesiology. Familiarity with fitness assessment tools, exercise equipment, and data tracking software is typically important for hands-on learning. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns effectively support clients and collaborate with supervisors. These skills and qualities are essential for providing safe, evidence-based support and maximizing learning opportunities in professional fitness and rehabilitation settings.

What is the difference between Exercise Science Student Internship vs Personal Trainer?

A Personal Trainer is a certified professional providing personalized fitness training directly to clients. The internship is more educational, whereas personal training is a client-facing service role.

Most stretching methodologies try to wait out, overpower, trick, or ignore the stretch reflex. The proven way to increase performance and mobility is to work with the stretch reflex with the revolutionary techniques available through the Stretch Zone® Methodology (SZM). The SZM Practitioner identifies any postural and movement limitations, then tries to correct or mitigate them through specific applied stretching sessions. With a balanced system the customer will reach their true maximum potential, whether they are an professional athlete, weekend warrior, couch potato, or suffering from chronic pain or illness.
A career with Stretch Zone® means not just meeting and maintaining a level of excellence, but continually improving in skill, to further one's expertise and to advance the industry. As a minimum prerequisite to SZM we recommend a personal training certification in ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA or NCSF and/or a license in therapeutic massage or other accredited body work.
