About the Program

Exercise Science is a division within the College of Health Sciences. The division includes both a growing undergraduate Exercise Science program delivered in a traditional face-to-face format and an online Master of Exercise Physiology program. Both programs are accredited by the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP). The division is currently staffed by three full-time faculty members holding doctoral degrees in Exercise Physiology who primarily support the instructional responsibilities of both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Faculty are encouraged to pursue collaborative scholarship and interdisciplinary engagement across the College of Health Sciences.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science is offered through five curriculum tracks designed to prepare students for a variety of professional and graduate education pathways. While all Exercise Science majors complete a common core curriculum, students may pursue specialized tracks in:

  • Pre-Physical Therapy
  • Pre-Occupational Therapy
  • Pre-Athletic Training
  • Pre-Physician Assistant Studies
  • Applied Exercise Science (Professional)

In addition to the undergraduate curriculum, high-achieving students may pursue accelerated pathways into Walsh University's graduate programs in Physical Therapyand Occupational Therapy, as well as Athletic Training at Youngstown State University through an established articulation agreement.

Position Summary

Walsh University invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Exercise Science program within the College of Health Sciences. This is a non-tenure-track, position. Responsibilities include an undergraduate teaching load of four courses (12 credit hours) per semester (two eight-week terms), student advising and mentoring, participation in departmental responsibilities such as recruitment and curriculum development, university and community service, and maintaining an active scholarly agenda that includes student engagement.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad understanding of exercise science and the ability to teach across the undergraduate curriculum in both face-to-face and online formats, with potential opportunities for graduate-level instruction. This position supports the University's mission of educating students in the Catholic intellectual tradition while preparing graduates for professional practice, advanced study, and leadership in health and human performance fields.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student mentorship, and active engagement in service to theprogram, University, and profession. Positions are typically appointed at the Assistant Professor rank, though appointment at the Associate Professor level may be considered for candidates with exceptional qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Teaching

  • Teach undergraduate (and eventually graduate) courses within the department (e.g., exercise physiology, biomechanics, bioenergetics, exercise testing and prescription, research methods, or related areas aligned with expertise).
  • Deliver instruction through face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online formats.
  • Provide high-quality laboratory instruction and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Mentor and advise students in research, capstone projects, and career preparation.
Scholarship
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda appropriate for a teaching-focused institution.
  • Engage students in collaborative research where appropriate.
  • Disseminate scholarly work through peer-reviewed publications and/or professional presentations.
Service
  • Participate in curriculum development and program assessment.
  • Support accreditation standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees.
  • Develop community and clinical partnerships that enhance student learning opportunities.
  • Contribute to student recruitment, retention, and program promotion efforts.

Education:

  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or related terminal degree) in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, or closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered.

Work Experience:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Record of peer-reviewed scholarship

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The successful applicant will require mobility to work in standard office setting, use standard office equipment, and engage students in a classroom for both lecture and laboratory courses. They must possess sufficient visual ability to read printed and digital materials as well as adequate hearing and speech abilities to receive, interpret, and communicate verbal information.
