Job description

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION

To prescribe, lead, and modify exercise for persons with medical limitations, especially cardio-respiratory and related diseases. Assists in the education of patients, other health professionals and the community at large. Job is performed appropriately for the needs for the age population served, as defined in the department's scope of service.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Develops and implements exercise prescriptions according to patient needs.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Evaluates and interprets clinical data and exercise test results to formulate exercise prescriptions according to established criteria.
Evaluates patient responses to exercise & conditioning and adjust strategies to optimize outcomes.
Applies scientific principles of conditioning and motivating techniques for establishing a healthy lifestyle for individuals with medical or physical limitations.
Identifies risk factors in patient populations for more effective treatment outcomes.
Modifies exercise prescriptions for patients with specific secondary limitations beyond cardiopulmonary disease.

2. Conducts and administers exercise sessions and tests.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Conducts exercise sessions demonstrating leadership, proper monitoring, enthusiasm and creativity.
Designs exercise prescriptions based on clinical state of patient's results of exercise tests.
Provides patient's physicians with periodic comprehensive reports of patient activities and complications.
Participates on the interdisciplinary team for the patient populations served on a daily basis.
Educates patients, staff, interns & community relative to exercise physiology and cardiovascular disease (i.e. heart disease prevention, risk factor management, and cardiovascular reconditioning).

3. Performs all other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Internship in area of cardiac reconditioning strongly preferred.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in exercise science preferred, will consider bachelor's degree in process of advancement

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
State License strongly preferred
BLS certification
HIPAA REQUIREMENTS
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, information related to patient location, religious beliefs and/or public health records.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, transports, monitors or observes patients, and monitors clinical alarms.
