We're looking for a Senior UI UX Designer to take ownership of the design vision, system, and roadmap for our Shopify storefront. This is a strategic and hands-on role: you'll set the design direction, build and govern our design system, lead UX research and experimentation, and work directly with backend/frontend developers to ship high-quality, conversion-driving experiences. You'll also mentor other designers/developers on UX best practices and be the voice of the customer experience in cross-functional planning.
You understand that great e-commerce design isn't just beautiful — it's measurable. You'll be expected to connect design decisions to business outcomes: conversion rate, AOV, retention, and brand perception, and to build the case for design investments the same way a product leader would.
Key Responsibilities
Design strategy & vision
- Own the end-to-end UX/UI strategy for the Gurunanda storefront, aligned with brand identity and business growth goals
- Audit the current site experience — navigation, PDP/PLP, checkout, mobile experience — and identify where UX is costing conversion, trust, or retention
- Build and maintain a prioritized design roadmap tied to measurable outcomes (conversion rate, AOV, bounce rate, retention)
- Partner with e-commerce, marketing, and engineering leadership to translate business goals into design priorities
- Champion the customer's perspective in planning discussions; balance stakeholder requests against a coherent, long-term design vision
Design system & craft
- Build, own, and evolve a scalable design system / component library that ensures visual and interaction consistency across the site
- Set and uphold high standards for typography, layout, color, motion, and interaction design across all storefront touchpoints
- Lead the design of key experiences: homepage, collection/PDP pages, checkout flow, subscription/loyalty experiences, and campaign/landing pages
- Ensure designs are accessible (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive by default, not as an afterthought
Research, testing & optimization
- Lead UX research: usability testing, customer interviews, heatmaps/session recordings (Hotjar/Clarity), and analytics review (GA4)
- Define and prioritize an A/B testing and experimentation roadmap in partnership with CRO/marketing; use data to validate design decisions
- Continuously identify friction points across the customer journey and propose prioritized, evidence-backed improvements
- Establish UX metrics and reporting that make design's business impact visible to leadership
Cross-functional leadership & mentorship
- Work closely with frontend/backend developers to ensure designs are technically feasible, performant, and implemented faithfully
- Review and provide UX/UI feedback on development work; be the final quality gate for design fidelity before launch
- Mentor junior/mid-level designers or developers on UX principles, design system usage, and craft
- Represent design in cross-functional planning (product, marketing, engineering) and advocate for the resourcing design needs to do its job well
- Maintain documentation of design decisions, guidelines, and the design system so knowledge isn't siloed
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of UI/UX design experience, with 3+ years in a senior or lead capacity owning a design system or product/site experience end-to-end
- Proven experience designing for e-commerce, ideally on Shopify or Shopify Plus, with a strong understanding of how storefront UX drives conversion and revenue
- Expert-level skills in a modern design tool (Figma preferred), including component libraries, auto-layout, and design tokens
- Demonstrated ability to build and govern a design system used by multiple contributors
- Strong grounding in UX research methods (usability testing, user interviews) and in interpreting quantitative data (GA4, heatmaps, A/B test results) to inform design
- Experience partnering directly with developers to ship pixel-accurate, responsive, accessible implementations
- Track record of tying design work to measurable business outcomes (conversion, AOV, retention) and communicating that impact to non-design stakeholders
- Strong visual design fundamentals: typography, layout, color, hierarchy, motion
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive design practices
- Experience mentoring other designers or leading design critique/review processes
- Comfortable operating with significant ownership and ambiguity, setting direction rather than just executing briefs
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in DTC e-commerce, especially CPG, beauty, or wellness brands
- Familiarity with Shopify theme architecture (Online Store 2.0) and technical constraints of Liquid-based storefronts
- Experience designing for headless/composable commerce (Hydrogen) or JS frameworks (React, Vue, Alpine.js)
- Experience with experimentation/personalization tools (Intelligems, Nosto, or similar)
- Experience building or scaling a design function (hiring, process, tooling) as a company grows
- Familiarity with subscription, loyalty, or membership UX patterns
- A portfolio that demonstrates both strong craft and measurable business impact
