Job description

Description
The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Neurology.
Founded by Dr. Horatio Wood in 1871, Penn Neurology is the nation's first department of neurology and has a rich history, with a long tradition of excellence in patient care, research and education in both adult and pediatric neurology. Since its founding, Penn Neurology has shaped the field by pioneering essential neurologic treatments and diagnostic techniques. The Department has systematically built programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the community.
In addition to excellence in its tripartite mission, the Department of Neurology has substantive ties to multiple centers, institutes, departments and other schools on campus.
The Chair of the Department directs nearly 200 full-time and associated faculty engaged in a comprehensive range of clinical activities organized into 20 clinical divisions and programs, with an additional 465 professional and support staff. For outpatient care, the Chair oversees 12 facilities and in FY2025, the Department performed over 70,000 outpatient visits, with specialty practice sites contributing to an additional 26,000 visits. In the same year, Penn Neurology discharged over 1,800 inpatients and saw nearly 12,000 consults on the inpatient service. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, all institutions of great distinction. The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine's 18 clinical departments.
Qualified candidates hold an MD degree with active board certification in neurology. Dual degrees are welcome. Candidates must qualify for faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor rank in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, candidates must possess strong leadership skills suited to a matrixed environment; the ability to develop and execute innovative strategies; demonstrated experience leading effective clinical operations; a highly respected academic record; a commitment to faculty development, retention, and recruitment; and experience in development and donor relations.
The executive search firm, Korn Ferry, is assisting Penn Medicine with this search. All interested applicants are invited to send their curriculum vitae and letter of interest to the attention of Amber Gornik at: amber.gornik@kornferry.com. Applicants must also apply for this position via this posting. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled, although indication of interest is encouraged by June 22, 2026, for full consideration.
