Position Summary:

The Excavation Foreman / Equipment Operator leads field crews andoperatesheavy equipment forexcavationconstruction projects involving grading, trenching, drainage, and site preparation. This role ensures work is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently whilemaintaininghigh-quality standards. The ideal candidate combines hands-on equipment skills with strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Crew Management

  • Supervise excavation and site-prep crews on residential and commercial projects.

  • Assign daily tasks,monitorwork progress, and ensure crews meet production goals.

  • Train team members on proper excavation techniques, equipment operation, and safety practices.

  • Maintain clear, respectful communication with crews, subcontractors, and supervisors.

Equipment Operation

  • Safelyoperateheavy machinery including:

  • Excavators (mini to mid-size)

  • Skid steers andwheelloaders

  • Dozers (optional depending on company)

  • Compactors androllers

  • Articulated Haul Trucks

  • Perform grading, trenching, site leveling, and material excavation with precision.

  • Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections, reporting equipment issues promptly.

Project Execution & Quality Control

  • Interpret grading plans, blueprints, and layout drawings to ensureaccurateexcavation.

  • Set grades using laser levels, GPS systems, or manual layout tools.

  • Oversee installation prep for utilities,roadways,drainage systems,retainingwalls, and foundations.

  • Conduct daily site checks to confirm quality, safety, and compliance with project specifications.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce strict adherence to OSHA andcompanyexcavation/trenching safety protocols.

  • Lead daily job-site safety meetings andmaintaina clean, organized work environment.

  • Identifyhazards early and implement corrective actionsimmediately.

Logistics& Coordination

  • Coordinate site access, equipment staging, material deliveries, and work sequencing.

  • Communicate proactively with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other trades to avoid conflicts.

  • Track and report crew hours, equipment usage, and production progress.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of excavation and equipment operation experience.

  • 1+ year of crew leadership,foreman, or lead operator experience.

  • Strongproficiencywith excavators,wheel loaders,skid steers, and grading equipment.

  • Ability to read construction plans, grades, and utility layouts.

  • Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trenching regulations.

  • Valid driver's license; CDL preferred (but notrequired).
