Boynton Health, https://boynton.umn.edu/ , isseeking a strong, accomplished clinical medical leader to serve asthe Executive Medical Director. This leader will champion studentand patient-centered responsive health care through a team-basedapproach. This position will provide strategic direction andoversight for clinical services and collaborate with other leadersto foster, promote, and engage in health and wellness activities atBoynton and across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.The Executive Medical Director will leverage the clinic's strengthsand demonstrate a commitment to innovation & effectiveness.Boynton Health is looking for clinical leadership that focuses onthe current and future state of health services that meets theneeds of all students.
Areas of ResponsibilityThis role is structured into two core areas of focus: ExecutiveLeadership (65%) and Direct Patient Care in Urgent andPrimary Care (35%) . This position supervises the clinicaldirectors of primary care, psychiatry, optometry, allied health andpharmacy. The Executive Medical Director serves as a dyad with theExecutive Director and reports directly to the Executive Vice-President of Health Affairs.
Executive Leadership (65%)Strategic Planning, Budget, and Program Development
- Campus Student Health Champion: Partner with theExecutive Director to serve as a prominent campus champion forstudent and community health and wellness across the University ofMinnesota Twin Cities campus.
- Strategic Initiatives: Collaborate with the BoyntonHealth Executive Team to develop and guide strategic clinicalinitiatives aimed at enhancing clinical services and achievingsuperior quality outcomes.
- Service Line Expansion: Work with clinical directors toidentify growth opportunities and direct service line anddepartment development across primary care, gynecology, gendercare, optometry, dental, physical therapy, nutrition, and infectionprevention.
- Innovative Services: Implement innovative healthcareservices and interventions to meet the campus community's needs,specifically designing partnerships with campus leaders and studentgroups to target and support underserved students.
- Financial Management: Participate in the annualbudgeting process to ensure appropriate resource allocation forclinical functions and patient care. Ensure that clinical servicelines meet the revenue and expense targets established in thebudget in collaboration with the Operations and Finance leadershipteams
- Performance Metric Alignment: Establish annual unitperformance goals alongside the Executive Director and ExecutiveTeam, and lead the evaluation of prior-year achievements.
- Staffing Optimization: Provide expert consultation onappropriate staffing ratios for clinical providers.
Clinical Care Oversight and Supervision
- Evidence-Based Practice: Oversee the development,review, and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols, andevidence-based practice approaches.
- Concern and Incident Resolution: Direct the review andresolution of clinical concerns, patient grievances, medicalerrors, and infection prevention reports.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely withinterdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and improveworkflow dynamics.
- Technological Innovation: Sponsor and champion upgradesto the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other technology systemsto drive clinic efficiency.
- Continuity of Care: Cultivate collaborativerelationships with local hospitals and external healthcareproviders to streamline referral pathways, discharge planning, andcontinuity of care.
- Infectious Disease & Crisis Consultation: Provideauthoritative clinical consultation and expertise as needed duringinfectious disease outbreaks or campus-wide medical crises.
- Performance Management: Direct provider and staffsupervision in alignment with the University of MinnesotaโsPerformance Management philosophy. Provide annual work plans, trackmetrics, conduct reviews, and deliver timely coaching and feedbackto medical providers.
Campus Public Health Response
- Population Health Management: Design and executeclinical programs and services in coordination with the ExecutiveDirector to support the personal and public health needs of theUniversity community.
- Emergency Preparedness: Lead clinical efforts andemergency preparedness in response to public health emergencies,infectious diseases, natural disasters, or student medical criseswith the Executive Director. Actively liaise with local and statehealth agencies, the Office of Health Affairs, the Office forStudent Affairs, and the Health Emergency Response Office (HERO),serving in Boynton's Incident Command Structure duringemergencies.
Quality and Safety Improvement
- Quality Metrics: Oversee, monitor, and meet definedclinical quality and safety metrics in partnership with theExecutive Director.
- Performance Improvement Projects: Initiate, champion,and sponsor annual clinical quality improvement projects.
- Safety & Committee Work: Actively participate in andlead committees dedicated to identifying and resolving patient andstaff safety issues.
- Accreditation Standards: Maintain readiness for theAccreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) byleading and supporting workflow updates that align withaccreditation standards.
- Clinical Quality & Peer Review: Oversee clinicalquality reviews and provider peer review processes, delegating aclinical leader to head the peer review committee.
- Patient Privacy Advocacy: Model and enforce a strictcommitment to patient privacy in compliance with state, federal(FERPA/HIPAA), and University regulations.
Practice Leadership
- Service Line Representation: Attend and provide visibleclinical leadership at service line and provider meetings.
- Interdisciplinary Leadership: Guide and activelyparticipate in clinical quality or interdisciplinary consultationmeetings.
- Provider Mentorship: Monitor and mentor providers inareas of responsibility, focusing on clinical performance,professional staff interactions, documentation standards, andcollaborative behavior.
- Professional Development: Facilitate leadership andcontinuing professional development opportunities for clinicalleaders and medical staff.
- Policy Authority: Serve as the final authority onclinical policies, protocols, and guidelines governingpractitioners (including physicians, physician assistants, andnurse practitioners). Ensure clinical directors under supervisiondevelop, review, and revise policies to govern their respectivepractices.
- Recruitment & Hiring: Partner with Human Resourcesto define clinical qualifications and competencies, leading the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of new providersand clinical directors.
Engagement and Communication
- Relationship Building: Establish and maintain positive,respectful, and collaborative relationships with patients, staff,and the Executive Team.
- Goal Cascading: Clearly communicate organizationalgoals, operational initiatives, and updates to clinical staff.
- Policy Transparency: Disseminate relevant clinicalpolicy updates, guidelines, and procedural changes.
- Conflict Resolution: Facilitate healthyinterdisciplinary communication and actively manage conflictresolution.
- Stakeholder Relations: Respond to clinical concerns andfeedback from campus stakeholders, including participating inStudent Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) meetings.
The Executive Medical Director maintains an active clinicalpractice. Privileges are granted annually according to Minnesotastate law and include, but are not limited to:
- Assessments & Exams: Taking patient histories andperforming detailed physical examinations, including well-visitsand preventive evaluations.
- Diagnostic Review: Ordering, interpreting, andevaluating diagnostic data and laboratory tests.
- Procedures: Performing diagnostic and therapeuticprocedures within approved clinical privileges (e.g., biopsy, minorsurgery, wound care).
- Prescriptions: Prescribing, administering, anddispensing prescription and nonprescription medications and medicaldevices.
- Diagnosis & Management: Diagnosing and treatingacute illnesses, infectious diseases, minor trauma, and chronicconditions or diseases.
- Referrals: Issuing patient referrals to internal andexternal providers to facilitate treatment plans, including carecoordination for severe mental illness.
- Contraceptive Services: Providing contraceptiveservices, including emergency contraception.
- Patient Education: Educating patients on healthpromotion, disease prevention, current treatment options, andcompliance, while addressing patient questions.
- Follow-up: Reviewing test results with patients viaappointments, telephone consults, letters, or secure messages.
- Clinical Consultation: Consulting with other physiciansand healthcare professionals to confirm complex diagnoses andcoordinate care plans.
- Mentorship: Mentoring and supervising the clinical workof nursing staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, andclinical learners.
- Education: M.D. or D.O. degree.
- Licensure: Unrestricted licensure (or immediateeligibility) by the State of Minnesota to practice medicine.
- Board Certification: ABMS board certification in yourmedical specialty.
- Certifications: Active DEA certification.
- Leadership Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of senior clinical management,leadership, and supervisory experience in an outpatient primarycare group practice, community health clinic, and/or collegestudent health care setting.
- Demonstrated track record of building, nurturing, and leadinghigh-performing clinical teams.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, includingthe ability to handle difficult conversations and deliver clearobjectives.
