Biological Data Computation Support

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Biological Data Computation Support to support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Assess the workflow of high-throughput screening platform and identify the requirements and relevant fields to capture the chemical and biological data attributes that will support the configuration of a searchable database.
  • Support migration of the screening, chemical and ADME data into the database and management of the data in the database, while providing first in class analytical and reporting tools to drive decisions of down selecting promising small molecules for product development
  • Perform self-directed exploration and analysis of the dataset generated from the phenotypic screens, including use of relevant R packages, spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs that will help predict the behavior of a complex biological system or mechanistic basis for physiological and pathological responses to infection or therapeutic treatment, and that can be employed to design of the new or better drugs that are specific to the pathogen.
  • Apply their computational skills and biological background to develop computational tools that will support better approaches to integrate the screening data and metadata associated with the biological assays or chemical compounds.
  • Communicate experimental data, laboratory or other work-related issues to the appropriate POC. Communicate with vendors for technical support and troubleshooting laboratory equipment with assigned space.
  • Assist in the reporting and communication of the test results, preparation of technical reports, standard operating procedures and manuscripts. May be expected to present research findings at a scientific conference, if required, which may require CONUS and/or OCONUS travel. Present results in written and oral format publicly and internally.
  • Prepare and provide a biological data research technical progress report each month.
  • Present research findings/presentations at monthly lab meetings and attend scientific discussion weekly meetings.

Required Degree/Education/Certification:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's (or Master's degree preferred) in Behavioral Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Analytics, or other related concentration.
  • Graduate level training and proficiency in:
    • Statistical analysis
    • Biomedical research
    • Quantitative analysis

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Prefers a minimum of five plus (5+) years of related experience. (ie: Conducting research activities, processing and analyze data, visualizing the outcome, utilizing high performance computing, and drawing scientific conclusion in support of research efforts identifying biomarkers diseases (of military-relevant diseases preferred,) designing experiments, executing research protocols, and writing technical reports, manuscripts and funding applications.)
  • Experience with specialized tools such as R programming, Bioconductor, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, CLC genomics workbench, Genespring or equivalent software (preferred).
  • Must have knowledge of research design, statistical software packages.
  • Experience as lead on projects and as a principal investigator preferred.
