Job description

Department Overview
Environmental Services supports OHSU hospital and clinics comprising 2+ million square feet on the main campus and offsite clinics. The position oversees a team of 125 supervisors, environmental services technicians, and support staff to provide a safe and clean environment while facilitating timely patient flow and ensuring exceptional patient experience. EVS sanitizes the clinical environment to prevent the spread of disease and reduce healthcare associated infections; provides a clean and attractive environment for our patients and guests; and completes discharge cleans efficiently and effectively to facilitate patient flow and throughput.
The purpose of the position is to provide operational management over department activities related to
Environmental Services and to develop and implement departmental tactics that align with the operating plan to ensure outstanding patient care. The position is responsible for executing tactics within the strategic plan and for operational oversight of the department including staffing, patient and staff safety, patient experience and customer service, staff engagement and human resources, quality and performance improvement, and financial accountability. Must have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Function/Duties of Position
Staff Engagement: Assists in establishing and maintaining an employment environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.
  • Oversees a staff of approximately 125 employees. Manages and supports supervisors with functional area responsibilities.
  • Assists in evaluating and revising job classes and position descriptions to establish role expectations that align with industry standards and meet the needs of the department.
  • Manages recruitment and hiring processes to ensure optimum fit between employee and employee's job.
  • Ensures orientation and onboarding processes provide a solid foundation upon which employees will develop and succeed.
  • Assists in developing a comprehensive employee training program that increases capabilities, quality, service, and productivity; ensures a comprehensive leadership development program maximizes the critical thinking, quality, service, and professionalism of direct reports; develops and implements a performance assessment and evaluation programs that build on the strengths of the employee and identifies those areas which the employee needs improvement to be more effective.
  • Fosters a safety-first work environment for EVS employees
  • Ensures staff have the equipment and supplies to do their job
  • Recognizes staff for their inherent value and motivate staff to achieve their best work.

Safety, Quality, and Performance Improvement: Ensures the safety of our patients and visitors through high reliability of processes.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous process improvement; embodies OHSU Performance Excellence.
  • Assists in developing and implementing leader standard work
  • Assists in aligning EVS policies, processes, and procedures to industry best practices for healthcare environmental cleaning.
  • Ensures monitoring and reporting processes document continuous compliance to standard work
  • Partners with Infection Prevention and Control to audit and report on EVS cleaning effectiveness.
  • Maintains continuous readiness for hospital accreditation.

Leadership: Implements department strategy and culture to achieve organizational and departmental goals.
  • Assists in developing, assessing, revising the departmental strategic plan annually.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert providing knowledge and expertise with regard to EVS policies and procedures and infection control practices to reduce healthcare associated infections.
  • Collaborates with Healthcare leadership and peers in all matters related to EVS operations in order to establish and maintain solid and mutually beneficial relationships. Supports and enforces department policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and evaluates existing programs, services, policies and procedures. Recommends and implements new and or modified programs, services, policies, and procedures.
  • Fosters a mutually respectful and productive relationship with union leadership; effectively manages staff is accordance with OHSU policies and the terms of the collective bargaining agreement; serve on the EVS Labor Management Committee to leverage the collaboration among EVS staff and management to drive improvements in the quality of the employment environment.

Patient Experience and Customer Service: Manages a comprehensive patient- centered service program that ensures exceptional patient experience.
  • Maintains service standards to provide excellent customer service that enhances the rapport with patients through responsiveness to needs and requests.
  • Implements a patient rounding program engages EVS employees at all levels in patient and facilities rounding.
  • Manages the patient experience program to address areas of greatest opportunity and to recognize pockets of excellence.
  • Utilize visual management tools to make scores, targets, and trends visible and interpretable to all staff.
  • Meets or exceeds established targets for patient experience scores.

Required Qualifications
  • 5 years of experience, 3 years of lead/supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Master's degree
  • CHESP certification through AHE
  • CMIP certification through AHE

Experience:
  • Management experience in a healthcare, hospitality, or education environment
  • Specific management experience in Environmental Services

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Previous experience in performance improvement tools such as Lean, Continuous Quality Improvement, etc.
  • Experience in union environment

Additional Details
Busy environment with many interruptions, multiple demands and diverse people interactions. Office setting is a close environment with noise and frequent interruptions. Must be able to handle multiple priorities and demands. Spends majority of time in patient care areas with patients, families, visitors, nursing, and EVS staff. Must be comfortable working in a healthcare environment with the presence of blood, blood borne pathogens, and bodily fluids.
