Job description

Covington, OH (in-office) | Full-time, exempt | $50,000-$100,000/year DOE
Build the software insurance companies actually run on.
At Marias Technology, we do not build our own system, we support a large number of systems created for the insurance industry by our vendor partners. Marias software developers customize and configure these partner systems to meet our customers' needs. As part of this you will build software solutions, system integrations, and data extraction tools that our insurance clients depend on daily. And its our job to help our customers succeed.
As a Software Developer on our Software Services team, you'll write clean, maintainable code in Java, SQL, TypeScript, and JavaScript; design APIs and integrations that let separate systems talk to each other; and deploy to Azure and AWS. You'll see how your work helps our customers succeed.
We're a family-owned business, which shapes how we work more than you might expect. People matter more than sales metrics. The ownership knows exactly how you are contributing. And the work you bill directly impacts the community that we call home.
What you'll do
  • Develop custom software solutions, system integrations, and data extraction tools for insurance company clients
  • Build solutions that enable multiple systems to communicate and share data effectively
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-structured code using Java, SQL, TypeScript, JavaScript, and other technologies in our stack
  • Read and interpret technical specifications and business requirements to determine scope, deliverables, and level of effort
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs, webhook integrations, and data exchange processes between systems
  • Test and debug your work before release, and support defect resolution identified during QA
  • Participate in code reviews as both author and reviewer - giving constructive feedback, not just receiving it
  • Apply Git version control best practices and participate in CI/CD workflows
  • Deploy, monitor, and support solutions on Azure and AWS
  • Document code, solutions, and technical processes clearly for the team
  • Communicate status, technical challenges, risks, and estimates to the Software Services Manager and project team
  • Collaborate with testers, analysts, and client stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve issues
  • Provide technical guidance to Software Developer Interns and less experienced teammates
  • Learn additional languages and frameworks as project needs require

What you need
Required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field - or equivalent demonstrated professional development experience
  • Working proficiency in one or more of: Java, SQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Python
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles, data structures, and algorithms
  • Experience with relational databases and writing SQL queries
  • Experience with Git in a collaborative development environment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and business requirements
  • Ability to work full-time, in-office in Covington, OH

Preferred
  • Prior professional software development experience, including internship experience
  • Experience designing or consuming RESTful APIs and webhook integrations
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), CI/CD workflows, and modern deployment practices
  • Familiarity with additional languages and frameworks we use - VB.NET, Python, PHP, Angular, Node.js
  • Experience with automated testing practices
  • Prior insurance industry knowledge, or willingness to learn insurance terminology and workflows on the job
  • Personal coding projects, hackathon participation, or open-source contributions

The range is wide on purpose
$50,000-$100,000 depending on experience is a real range, not a negotiating posture. We're open to a developer a year or two out of school who writes solid code and wants to grow, and we're equally open to an experienced engineer who can own complex integrations from day one. Where you land depends on what you bring - tell us honestly where you are and we'll do the same.
Who thrives here
  • You own your work. From requirements through deployment, not just until it compiles
  • You write for the next person. Maintainable beats clever
  • You review well in both directions. You give useful feedback and you take it without defensiveness
  • You estimate honestly and raise blockers early instead of hoping they resolve themselves
  • You can explain technical things to non-technical people. Clients and analysts are part of this job
  • You have integrity. You do the right thing when it's inconvenient, and you own your mistakes

Pay: $50,000-$100,000/year depending on experience, paid semi-monthly (15th and end of month) via direct deposit
Health coverage - effective the 1st of the month following your hire date
  • Medical (Anthem HSA Plan): Marias pays 80% of the monthly premium
  • Health Savings Account: company contributes quarterly - $750/year for single coverage up to $1,500/year for family coverage
  • Dental (Superior Dental Care): Marias pays 50% of the monthly premium
  • Vision (VSP): available at low employee cost

  • Basic Life Insurance and AD&D - annual salary, up to $50,000
  • Long-Term Disability - 60% of monthly salary, up to $6,000
  • Short-Term Disability - 66.67% of weekly earnings, up to $1,000

Retirement
  • 401(k) with company match of 50% of your contributions up to 8% of salary, after a 90-day waiting period, with full vesting at year 6

Time off
  • 15 days PTO per year after a 90-day waiting period (pro-rated by hire date)
  • 10 paid holidays

  • $50 apparel allowance (after 90 days)
  • Employee store discounts: Glacier View Coffee (10%), Pacific Coast Surf Shop (25%), Elias & Oliver Boutique (25%)
