Job description

Position Summary
The Fine Arts Studio Monitor supports the safe, orderly, and effective operation of the Fine Arts, Photography, Music, and Photo Lab facilities. This position is responsible for opening and closing studios and practice areas, monitoring student use of the facilities, maintaining lab cleanliness and supplies, and assisting students with basic technical questions related to photography and studio work. The Studio Monitor helps enforce lab policies, reports concerns to faculty or lab staff, and supports special projects as assigned. This position requires in-person work and may include evening and weekend hours.
Essential Functions
  • Monitor Fine Arts, Photography, Music, and Photo Lab facilities to help ensure the safety and well-being of students and the protection of equipment and spaces.
  • Open and secure studios, music practice rooms, and lab areas for students enrolled in approved courses; notify security if rooms are found unlocked and unoccupied.
  • Maintain studio and lab spaces by keeping facilities clean, orderly, and properly supplied, including assisting with photo darkroom chemicals and related materials.
  • Provide students, primarily in photography, with basic technical assistance while refraining from evaluating or judging the content of student work.
  • Enforce lab and studio policies and promptly report issues, concerns, or policy violations to faculty, lab technicians, or the immediate supervisor.
  • Conserve resources by ensuring lights, water, equipment, and other materials are turned off or secured when not in use.
  • Follow instructions related to studio and equipment procedures, including safety-related tasks such as shutting down equipment as directed.
  • Demonstrate reliability by reporting to assigned shifts on time and arranging appropriate coverage when absence or tardiness is anticipated.
  • Assist faculty or the immediate supervisor with special projects and other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Must be a Fine Arts major or minor; Photography majors are preferred.
  • Must have completed PHO 203 Basic Photography and receive faculty approval.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in black-and-white darkroom printing, matting, dry mounting, and mixing photo darkroom chemicals; RA4 color printing proficiency is preferred.
  • Must be able to operate basic photo lab equipment, including a dry mounting press and darkroom enlarger.
  • Must be reliable, responsible, friendly, helpful, respectful, and able to follow instructions carefully.
  • Must be comfortable working in person in studio, lab, and classroom-related environments, including areas where photography chemicals and equipment are used.
  • Evening and weekend availability is preferred.
