Job description

JOB TITLE: Machine Operator / Machinist

DEPARTMENT: Production/Operations

REPORTS TO: Production Lead

SHIFTS: Most roles work one of the following shifts:

  • Day (8:00AM – 4:00PM
  • Evening (4:00PM – 12:00AM)
  • Night (12:00AM – 8AM)
  • Some roles will work a 12 hour shift:
    1. Day (7:00AM – 7:00PM)
    2. Night (7:00PM – 7:00AM)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assist the Production Lead in the efficient operation of the plant manufacturing process and equipment operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Comply with all OSHA, company, environmental and housekeeping polices.
  • Start machines, monitor their operations, and record operational data.
  • Determine setup procedures and select machine tooling, according to specifications.
  • Read work orders or production schedules to determine specifications, such as materials to be used, locations of cutting lines, or dimensions and tolerances.
  • Adjust controls to produce copper cathode into specified diameters.
  • Measure completed copper tubes to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, rulers, etc.
  • Change tooling on machines according to production specifications.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Feed copper cathode or copper tubing into or through equipment.
  • Inspect production equipment and copper cathode or copper tubing for quality defects
  • Mark copper tubing with identifying information.
  • Measure dimensions of copper tubing to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor equipment operation to ensure that products are not flawed.
  • Read work orders or other instructions to determine product specifications or materials requirements.
  • Thoroughly clean and maintain process/work area.
  • Overhead crane operation, forklift operation, and other material handling and warehouse duties may be assigned

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Prefer 1 year related experience but very willing to train unexperienced applicants with a high degree of mechanical aptitude.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY:

  • Basic Mathematics.
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Ability to communicate with others effectively.
  • Thorough understanding or the ability to quickly learn production operations and machinery.
  • Understanding of and the ability to abide by applicable OSHA safety regulations.
  • Ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Troubleshooting operating errors and deciding what to do about it.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:Steel toed boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and high visibility vest always required. Dependent upon job assignment, hearing protection and safety sleeves may be required. All PPE (with the exception of steel toed boots/shoes) will be provided by the company at no cost.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • General: May stand up to 8-12 hours per shift, with frequent walking throughout the facility, and occasional sitting during machine operation or breaks
  • Strength & Endurance: May regularly lift up to 50 lbs., sometimes more with assistance. May push or pull equipment, materials, or carts up to 75 lbs. Will use precise hand-eye coordination for machine adjustments, cutting, or handling of tubing
  • Mobility & Flexibility: frequent bending, stooping, or kneeling. May occasionally climb ladders or platforms to access equipment. Frequent reaching overhead and at ground level to manage tools or controls
  • Sensory Requirements: Must have sufficient hearing to detect alarms, machines sounds, and instructions in a noisy environment. Must have sufficient close vision for reading gauges, color recognition, and inspecting finished tubing.
  • Environmental Conditions: Must be able to work in high temperature areas near extrusion and annealing furnace lines. Must be able to withstand loud production environment with available hearing protection as needed. Repetitive Motion: frequent repetitive hand, arm, or wrist movements depending on the machine being operated.
