Job description

As a Greenfield Village Halloween/Holiday Nights Presenter, you will engage guests through mission-based historical presentations while supporting the successful operation of Greenfield Village's seasonal and evening events, including Old Car Festival, Halloween and Holiday Nights. This role combines public interaction, historical interpretation, event operations, and guest service in a dynamic outdoor environment.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Assist with seasonal event activities, including pumpkin preparation and lighting, historical character portrayal, storytelling, fire tending, guest wayfinding, kerosene lamp preparation and lighting, and other event-specific responsibilities
  • Perform operational duties including site preparation, maintenance, cleanup, and general event support
  • Provide exceptional hospitality while ensuring the safety and comfort of guests and fellow team members
  • Maintain the appearance and functionality of assigned work areas
  • Help protect historic artifacts, buildings, and landscapes from damage
  • Collaborate with teammates and leadership to communicate operational needs, share feedback, and improve program effectiveness
  • Participate in departmental meetings, work teams, and required training sessions
  • Contribute as a positive, dependable team member while supporting colleagues across departments
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Eighteen (18) years or older
  • Valid driver's license
  • Availability to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, weekdays, and holidays
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Special Skills
  • Strong verbal, interpersonal, and public presentation skills
  • Ability to confidently engage and communicate with guests of all ages and backgrounds
  • Friendly, outgoing, energetic, and customer-focused demeanor
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently when needed
  • Comfortable speaking before large groups and portraying historical characters when assigned
  • Excellent customer service and guest engagement skills
  • Good manual dexterity and the ability to perform hands-on operational tasks
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and distribute firewood as required
  • Comfortable handling kerosene, open flames, and other flammable materials while following established safety procedures
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in fast-paced, outdoor event environments
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing operational needs and event assignments
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
  • Dependable, punctual, and committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for guests and fellow team members

PHYSICAL / MENTAL / ENVIRONMENTAL:
Physical: Standing, Walking, Kneeling, Crouching: Typical. Lifting, carrying, and pushing: Occasional, up to 30 lbs. Tolerance for hot and cold temperatures preferred. Unless noted here, other physical requirements are minimal or not applicable.
Vision: Normal
Mental: Observation, analysis, interpretation, decision making, and multi-tasking. Ability to read guest needs and interests and respond appropriately. Should be able to work under pressure and around large crowds. Willingness to discuss sensitive historical topics and challenging themes with a diverse range of guests.
Environment: Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons (including sunny and inclement weather) as necessary. Non-air-conditioned interiors. Smoke from cooking and warming fires. Period clothing/costumes. Kerosene lantern maintenance. Walking over uneven outdoor surfaces in daylight and darkness. Flexibility with on-call scheduling and availability as needed during evenings, weekends, and short-notice situations.
