What is an evening embedded software consultant?

Evening Embedded Software Consultants are professionals who specialize in developing, testing, and maintaining embedded software systems, typically working during evening hours to provide flexible support for clients. They often assist with firmware development, troubleshooting, and integration of software in hardware devices such as IoT products, automotive systems, or industrial controllers. These consultants may work remotely or on-site, collaborating with engineering teams to ensure that embedded solutions meet performance and reliability requirements. Their evening availability allows businesses to extend development cycles or address urgent issues outside regular business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an evening embedded software consultant?

To thrive as an Evening Embedded Software Consultant, you need strong proficiency in embedded systems programming (C/C++), debugging, and systems integration, typically supported by a degree in computer engineering or related fields. Familiarity with RTOS, microcontrollers, hardware interfacing, and tools like JTAG debuggers, as well as relevant certifications such as Embedded Systems Professional, is often expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills are vital for collaborating remotely and delivering solutions within off-peak hours. These skills ensure efficient diagnosis, timely delivery, and effective client engagement in fast-paced consulting environments.

What are the typical challenges an evening embedded software consultant may face when working with clients remotely after standard business hours?

As an Evening Embedded Software Consultant, you may encounter challenges such as limited real-time access to hardware resources, delayed communication with daytime team members, and the need to quickly adapt to client-specific protocols or urgent troubleshooting requests. Managing time effectively and ensuring clear documentation are crucial for seamless handoffs between teams working different shifts. Additionally, you may need to proactively coordinate with international or distributed teams to address issues that span multiple time zones.

Job description

Position Summary

The Plumbing Sales Consultant / Estimator is the face of our plumbing business in the field — responsible for generating new business, building lasting customer relationships, and turning opportunities into signed work through accurate, competitive job estimates. This role blends technical plumbing knowledge with consultative selling: evaluating jobs on-site, preparing detailed estimates and proposals, presenting options to customers, and closing the sale. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable in a crawl space assessing a repipe and across the table from a homeowner or property manager earning their trust.

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Business Development

  • Proactively generate new business through referrals, networking, community engagement, and follow-up on company-provided leads.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with homeowners, property managers, builders, general contractors, and commercial accounts to drive repeat and referral business.
  • Represent the company at trade events, home shows, and community functions as a trusted plumbing advisor.
  • Maintain a healthy sales pipeline and consistently meet or exceed monthly and quarterly sales targets.
  • Follow up on all open proposals and past customers to maximize close rates and lifetime customer value.

Estimating & Job Scoping

  • Perform on-site evaluations of residential and light commercial plumbing projects, including repairs, replacements, repipes, water heaters, fixtures, and service agreements.
  • Prepare accurate, detailed estimates covering labor, materials, equipment, and permits, ensuring healthy margins while remaining competitive.
  • Present good/better/best options clearly and honestly, helping customers choose the solution that fits their needs and budget.
  • Coordinate with the service manager and field technicians to confirm job scope, schedule, and execution details after the sale.
  • Track estimate win/loss results and adjust pricing and approach based on market feedback.

Customer Experience

  • Serve as the customer's primary point of contact from first visit through job completion, ensuring clear communication at every stage.
  • Resolve customer questions and concerns promptly and professionally, protecting the company's reputation and online reviews.
  • Document all customer interactions, estimates, and sales activity accurately in the CRM/field management system.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of plumbing industry experience (field, service, or sales); working knowledge of plumbing systems, codes, and installation practices required.
  • Proven success in sales, estimating, or customer-facing roles — in-home or trade sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to accurately scope and price plumbing jobs, read plans when needed, and explain technical work in plain language.
  • Strong relationship-building, communication, and negotiation skills; a natural networker who follows through.
  • Comfortable using CRM software, estimating tools, tablets, and standard office applications.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to pass background check and drug screening.
  • Plumbing license or journeyman card a plus, but not required.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to access job sites including attics, crawl spaces, basements, and rooftops; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Daily local travel to customer sites; occasional evening or weekend appointments to meet customer availability.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission structure.
  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance, phone, and tablet provided.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k); paid time off and holidays.
  • Ongoing training and career advancement opportunities.
