What is an evening dog trainer?

Evening dog trainers are professionals who provide dog training services during the evening hours. They work with dogs and their owners to teach obedience, address behavioral issues, and improve overall manners, often accommodating clients who have daytime commitments. Evening dog trainers may conduct group classes, private sessions, or specialized training based on the dog's needs. Their schedules make training accessible for working individuals or families with busy daytime routines.

What are some common challenges an evening dog trainer might face and how are they addressed?

As an Evening Dog Trainer, you may encounter challenges such as working with dogs that are more energetic after a day at home, or coordinating with clients who have busy schedules. Additionally, evening sessions can mean working in lower-light conditions or managing distractions in public spaces. To address these, trainers often use positive reinforcement techniques, maintain clear communication with pet owners, and adapt lesson plans to suit the dog's energy level and environment. Building flexibility and strong observation skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an evening dog trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Evening Dog Trainer, you need a solid understanding of canine behavior, animal training techniques, and often a certification from a recognized training organization. Familiarity with training tools such as clickers, leashes, and behavior tracking apps is beneficial, along with knowledge of basic first aid for animals. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help you effectively teach both dogs and their owners, especially during evening sessions when clients may be tired or distracted. These abilities ensure safe, effective training sessions that foster positive results for both pets and their owners.

This is a W-2 employee position, not independent contractor work, with a locally owned pet care company serving the Plymouth area since 2008. Starting base pay is $16.00 per hour during paid training.

More Than a Job. A Team That Cares.

At Just Around the Corner Pet Sitting & Dog Walking, we believe caring for pets begins with caring for the people who care for them.

Since 2008, we've been privileged to serve families throughout Plymouth. We're proud to have earned a reputation for dependable, compassionate care, possible only because of the incredible people who wear the JAC logo every day.

When you join Just Around the Corner, you're joining a team that supports one another, celebrates successes together, and shares the common goal of providing exceptional care for every pet entrusted to us.

If you're looking for meaningful work, a supportive team, and the opportunity to make a difference every single day, we'd love to meet you.

Our Mission

We exist to provide pets with compassionate, dependable care while giving their families complete peace of mind. Every walk, every visit, every update, and every interaction reflects the trust our clients place in us. Our goal isn't simply to care for pets. It's to become part of their lives.

What Makes JAC Different?

Every member of our team is carefully selected, trained, supported, and coached throughout their career—with an experienced office team and trainers behind you from day one.

Paid Training That Doesn't Stop After Week One

Whether you've worked with animals for years or you're just beginning your professional pet care journey, we provide paid, hands-on training before you'll ever care for clients independently.

At JAC, learning is part of the job. As our company grows, our procedures improve, and we continue learning more about animal behavior and pet care, as well as the best technology to use to organize information and pass it along. We invest that knowledge back into our team.

You'll receive:

  • Paid hands-on training with experienced Pet Care Associates
  • Paid video training time
  • Safety and handling instruction
  • Ongoing coaching
  • Updated procedures and best practices
  • Regular feedback designed to help you grow

Exceptional pet care isn't something you learn once - It's something you continue building every day.

What This Position Looks Like

This is a part-time position. All Team Members are trained for both dog walking and pet sitting visits. Dog walkers travel between client homes during weekday midday hours, providing exercise, enrichment, and attentive care. Routes are matched to your location to minimize travel time. Pet sitting visits for dogs, cats, and other pets are scheduled as early as 7 AM and as late as 9 PM, including weekends, and a minimum of 3 days per week is needed for midday dog walking shifts. Additional morning, evening, weekend, and holiday pet sitting visits are available for team members looking for more hours.

Responsibilities include walking dogs safely in neighborhoods and local communities, caring for pets in clients' homes following detailed care instructions, handling dogs with varying temperaments and sizes, sending visit updates and photos through our pet care app, and communicating with the office and team throughout the day.

Qualifications

A reliable vehicle and valid driver's license, 18 years of age or older, comfort handling dogs of all sizes and temperaments, a smartphone for our scheduling and visit-reporting app, and the ability to pass a background check. Prior pet care experience is helpful but not required. Training is provided.

Opportunities to Grow

Many people join us because they love animals. Many stay because they love being part of our team.

As our company continues to grow, so do opportunities to take on additional responsibilities through training, mentoring, leadership, and specialty roles. We love promoting from within whenever possible.

Our Hiring Process

We want every new team member to feel confident and prepared before working independently.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Submit your application.
  • Initial virtual interview.
  • In person interview.
  • Paid hands-on training, shadowing experienced team members.
  • Begin working independently with continued coaching and support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous professional pet care experience?

No. Experience is certainly helpful, but it's not required. We hire people who have a genuine love for animals, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. We provide paid training and ongoing coaching.

Am I an employee or an independent contractor?

All JAC Pet Care Associates are W-2 employees. We believe that's better for our team, our clients, and the quality of care we provide.

Is training really paid, and does it continue after I'm hired?

Yes. We believe learning is work and we invest in our employees from day one. Training doesn't stop after your first week. We continually update procedures, provide coaching, and share new information about pet care, safety, and customer service.

How much will I earn?

As a result, many of our current Pet Care Associates experience an overall effective hourly value of approximately $18–$22 per hour, depending on their schedule, route, and client base.

Do I work alone?

Most visits are completed independently, but you'll always have support from our office staff and fellow teammates. We communicate throughout the day and help one another whenever needed.

What areas do you serve?
