What is an evening defense contractor software engineer?

An Evening Defense Contractor Software Engineer is a software professional who works during evening hours for a company contracted by the government or military to develop, maintain, or secure defense-related software systems. Their responsibilities often include writing code, testing software, addressing cybersecurity concerns, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support mission-critical projects. Working in the evening may be necessary to accommodate project deadlines, client needs, or around-the-clock operations. These engineers must usually obtain security clearances and adhere to strict confidentiality protocols. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to national security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an evening defense contractor software engineer?

To thrive as an Evening Defense Contractor Software Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, systems engineering, and security protocols, often supported by a relevant degree and U.S. security clearance. Familiarity with programming languages like C++, Java, or Python, as well as experience with defense-specific tools and secure development environments, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating on mission-critical projects and addressing complex technical challenges. These competencies ensure reliable, secure software solutions that meet strict defense standards and support national security objectives.

What are the typical challenges faced by an evening defense contractor software engineer, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge for Evening Defense Contractor Software Engineers is coordinating effectively with team members who work standard daytime hours, which can make real-time collaboration more difficult. Position Description:
At ServiceTrade, you'll build technology that matters - for your career, your team, and the thousands of commercial contractors who rely on our platform every day. We're on a mission to partner with commercial trades to deliver technology that enhances technician productivity, improves customer experiences, and drives scalable growth.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform who's excited to make an impact. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and optimization of our scalable batch and streaming data pipelines using Python, SQL, and key AWS technologies like DMS and Kinesis. You will own the architecture of our enterprise cloud data platforms, build high-performance ETL/ELT workflows, drive CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code best practices, and mentor junior engineers while leveraging modern AI-assisted tools to ensure system reliability, performance, and data integrity across our entire ecosystem.
Why ServiceTrade:
You'll belong here from the start.
We bring together kind, curious people with diverse perspectives and trust them with meaningful work. You'll have ownership, clarity, and support to solve real problems, make a visible impact for our customers, and continue growing as your role evolves.
On the Data Platform team, you'll have the opportunity to architect and scale mission-critical streaming and batch pipelines that directly power advanced analytics for thousands of commercial contractors. You will take true end-to-end ownership of complex data systems, leverage cutting-edge AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate delivery, and mentor the next generation of engineers in a collaborative, quality-driven environment.
About You:
You are someone who takes full ownership of your work and thrives on delivering solutions. If there's a problem in our system, no matter where the root cause lies, you pursue it until it's resolved - ensuring our customers experience a seamless service. You never compromise on quality and are always looking for ways to improve performance, scalability, and efficiency. With a proactive mindset, you aim to not just meet, but exceed customer expectations. Your can-do attitude drives you to find answers and make an impact, no matter the challenge.
Key Responsibilities and Activities:
  • Lead development, testing, and maintenance of scalable Python code for data ingestion, transformation, and processing across streaming and batch architectures.
  • Design and optimize data models and transformation logic that support advanced analytics and evolving BI needs, with built-in data quality and performance.
  • Build and tune high-performance ETL/ELT workflows using AWS DMS, Kinesis, and related data integration technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve pipeline issues, implementing preventative measures that guarantee data integrity and reliability.
  • Mentor junior engineers and establish documentation standards for code, models, and processes to enable knowledge transfer and best practices.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Data Engineering Mastery: Experience in data engineering, demonstrating expertise in designing, conducting rigorous code reviews, and managing complex, large-scale ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • Expertise in Cloud Data Platforms: Deep understanding and hands-on experience with enterprise-grade cloud data platforms such as Redshift, BigQuery, or Snowflake, including their architectural nuances and performance optimization strategies.
  • Advanced Programming Proficiency: Expert-level skills in Python and SQL (including advanced optimization techniques in MySQL, Postgres, and SQL Server), coupled with extensive experience with complex transformations and a strong command of AWS services (DMS, S3, Airflow, Kinesis, DocumentDB, CloudWatch, Kubernetes, Glue).
  • CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code Leadership: Proven ability to establish and maintain robust version control (GitHub) workflows, architect and implement sophisticated CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure, and a strong advocate for infrastructure-as-code principles and tools.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Practical experience using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate delivery - and the judgment to review, test, and own the output.
