What are Evening Computer Science Bioinformatics jobs?

Evening Computer Science Bioinformatics jobs are positions that primarily take place during evening hours and focus on applying computational methods to analyze biological data. These roles may involve tasks such as writing code to process genetic information, developing algorithms for biological research, and supporting laboratories or research teams outside traditional business hours. Such jobs are ideal for individuals seeking flexible schedules, including students or professionals who prefer working later in the day. Common employers include research institutions, hospitals, and biotech companies with extended operational hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Evening Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, and why are they important?

To excel as an Evening Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, you generally need a solid background in computer science, biology, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R, experience with bioinformatics tools (like BLAST and Bioconductor), and knowledge of databases are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate analysis, meaningful insights, and seamless integration of computational solutions to biological research challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working evening shifts in computer science bioinformatics roles?

Professionals in evening computer science bioinformatics positions may encounter challenges such as coordinating with daytime teams, balancing work-life commitments, and managing access to resources that may be less available after hours. Communication with colleagues in different shifts often requires proactive planning to ensure seamless project handoffs and data sharing. However, the evening schedule can also offer a quieter environment for focused analysis and coding, which some professionals find conducive to productivity.

Job description

About Plasmidsaurus
Plasmidsaurus is on a mission to accelerate new cures and promote a healthier planet by unlocking a new level of productivity for scientists. Our sequencing services are used daily by thousands of innovators, including Nobel laureates, Fortune 100 pharma, and over 70,000 scientists.
We began by revolutionizing plasmid sequencing, making it exponentially cheaper and faster, with innovative sequencing technologies and a global network of laboratories that turn samples into answers in hours, not weeks.
Now we are expanding that same disruptive model across all of genomics. With the launch of our new RNA-seq service, we are taking a bold step toward our vision to sequence everything, providing scientists everywhere with faster, simpler, and more affordable access to the data that powers discovery.
Every team member at Plasmidsaurus plays a crucial role in driving the future of biotech research. Together, we are building the world's most efficient sequencing engine that operates overnight, scales globally, and helps scientists make breakthroughs faster than ever before.
Position Overview
You'll work on the bioinformatics engine powering that impact, wearing many hats:
  • Building blazing-fast, production-grade bioinformatics workflows that process thousands of samples per day.
  • Developing novel algorithms that turn raw sequencing data into fast, intuitive, and accurate insights.
  • Staying on top of cutting-edge tools and finding creative ways to integrate them into real-world pipelines.
  • Hunting down bugs and taming the chaos of real-world sequencing data - biological artifacts, platform quirks, and all.
  • Translating bioinformatics outputs into dynamic scientific UX that feels magical to researchers.
  • Mentoring teammates and growing your own skills in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

Culture
You are someone who:
  • Thrives with high agency and high ownership - you lead projects from idea to production.
  • Is curious about the intersection of biology, algorithms, and software engineering.
  • Gets excited knowing your work directly accelerates the next generation of medicines and biotechnology.
  • Values clear communication and loves helping others level up.
  • Is energized by a tight-knit, fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications
PhD in a quantitative field (Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Physics) plus 3+ years building production bioinformatics pipelines.
Required:
  • Deep expertise in at least one of: microbial genomics (assembly/metagenomics), variant calling / large-scale genomics, or bulk/single-cell RNA-seq.
  • Significant experience with production Nextflow or Snakemake pipelines, including cloud deployments.
  • Strong understanding of core sequence analysis principles - alignment, assembly, and beyond.
  • Solid molecular biology foundation and hands-on experience with Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.
  • Proficiency in Python (numpy, pandas, biopython, Jupyter) and conda-based package management.
  • Docker / Apptainer / Singularity, Git + GitHub.
  • Experience building intuitive web tools for bioinformatics analysis.
  • Linux shell scripting and ability to write clean, production-ready code.
  • Experience with large-scale genomic data processing and storage.

Preferred:
  • Performant software in a compiled language (C++, Rust, etc.).
  • Strong interest in data visualization for scientific UX.
  • 1+ year of biology wetlab experience.
  • Track record developing novel bioinformatics algorithms.

We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly align with the job description as we seek out diverse and creative perspectives. Team members who love to learn and collaborate in an inclusive environment will thrive with us. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. If you need additional accommodations to feel comfortable during your interview process, please let us know at careers@plasmidsaurus.com.
