Job description

Position Summary

The Digital Organizer position has three primary responsibilities:

  • Digital communications (40%): Create compelling digital content including emails, texts, social media and SMS that moves APEN’s supporter base to action around member priorities. Implement digital organizing strategies to advance campaigns identified as a communications priority, including focused work on specific campaigns selected in collaboration with the rest of the Communications team. According to APEN’s rapid response protocol, respond to rapid response opportunities and movement moments by creating digital content and strategies that advance APEN’s organizing goals. Use digital platforms to share important org-wide announcements including job announcements, staffing changes and electoral endorsements. Support organizers in creating digital content that builds a member and supporter base for APEN’s sister organization, APEN Action.
  • Digital infrastructure (30%): Maintain and improve APEN’s website, including basic content and functionality updates. Maintain, update, and organize APEN’s digital communications assets, including photo storage, Canva accounts and digital storage of style guides and logos. In collaboration with the Digital Director, support administration of APEN’s organizing databases and contact tools (Action Builder and Action Network). Work with Development staff and Digital Director on integrating data and messaging between donor and supporter audiences. Work with the Operations team to support strong digital security practices throughout the organization. Maintain and improve digital infrastructure for APEN’s C4 sister organization, APEN Action. Maintain best practices for legal compliance in data- and cost-sharing between APEN and APEN Action with respect to the use of email/SMS lists and member/supporter data.
  • Organizer support (20%): Provide support and training for organizers on digital organizing best practices including data management, social media and email/SMS. Vet digital content and assist organizers with more technical/advanced aspects of forms, emails, texts, and imports/exports.
  • Organizational development and support (10%): Contribute to overall organizational coordination and planning processes, including strategic planning, yearly workplan and budgeting, annual board + staff meeting, bi-weekly staff meetings and component meetings. Contribute to the APEN culture of team-building, emotional intelligence, feminisms, and leadership development. Engage in grassroots and/or foundation fundraising as needed. Act as a spokesperson and engage with communications narrative framework as needed. Support various areas of organizational work, events, or campaigns as identified and participate in organizational committees and teams as needed. Manage volunteers, fellows, and interns as needed.

This position is supervised by the Digital Director and is part of the Communications team. Job may require some evening and weekend activities and travel.

Required Qualifications
  • Commitment to the mission and principles of APEN and environmental justice
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative reasoning
  • Fast learner
  • Compelling writer; experience telling stories that motivate people to action
  • Working knowledge of mass email, social media, and digital organizing best practices
  • Basic graphic design skills – familiarity with Canva or Adobe products
  • Intermediate Excel skills
  • Previous experience using Contact Relationship Management platforms (CRMs) such as Action Network, Action Builder, Salesforce, Salsa, EveryAction, CiviCRM (or others)
  • Clear communication skills
  • Team-oriented
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced visual storytelling, video editing, and/or graphic design skills
  • Experience administering CRMs, especially Action Builder and/or Action Network
  • Familiarity with SQL, HTML, and/or CSS
  • Experience customizing or building Wordpress websites
  • Background in Asian American immigrant and refugee organizing

Accessibility and Working Conditions

This position will require applicants to work on a computer daily for long periods of time, and collaborate with colleagues and coalition partners through Zoom, email, and other digital platforms. APEN will provide a computer and other equipment needed to fulfill basic job responsibilities. The role is hybrid, requiring 2–3 days of in‑person work at one of our APEN offices (Oakland, Richmond, or Los Angeles). Masks are required in APEN offices and indoor events, with the exception of eating and drinking. All employees are required to be vaccinated as part of our safety policy. The position may require work during irregular hours, including nights or weekends, and travel within California. The position does not require holding or moving heavy equipment, using ladders, or working in hazardous or unusual conditions.
