What is an ETL QA tester?

ETL QA Testers are professionals responsible for validating the accuracy, completeness, and quality of data as it moves through the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process in data warehousing or business intelligence projects. They design and execute test cases to ensure that data is correctly extracted from source systems, transformed according to business rules, and loaded into target systems without loss or corruption. ETL QA Testers work closely with developers, data analysts, and business stakeholders to identify issues and verify that data meets the required standards. Their role is crucial for ensuring reliable data for reporting and analytics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ETL QA tester?

To excel as an ETL QA Tester, you need a solid understanding of data warehousing, SQL, and QA methodologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools (such as Informatica or Talend), test automation frameworks, and defect tracking systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help testers identify issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate data validation, reliable system integration, and the delivery of high-quality data solutions.

What are some typical challenges ETL QA testers face when validating data pipelines, and how can they be addressed?

ETL QA Testers often encounter challenges such as incomplete or inconsistent data, complex data transformation logic, and large data volumes that make manual validation difficult. To address these issues, testers use automated testing tools, develop comprehensive test cases for edge scenarios, and collaborate closely with data engineers to understand transformation rules. Regular communication with stakeholders and maintaining detailed documentation also help ensure data integrity and streamline troubleshooting during the testing process.

What is the difference between Etl Qa Tester vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Senior QA/ETL Tester - Medicaid Data
Remote – U.S. based
12+ Month Contract role

We are seeking a seniorlevel QA / ETL Tester to support largescale Medicaid data platforms. This role is focused on backend validation of eligibility, claims, enrollment, payment, and reporting data flowing through ETL pipelines and enterprise data warehouses. This is not a UIonly QA role and not a business analyst role. The ideal candidate is handson with SQL, ETL validation, batch processing, and healthcare data rules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Validate Medicaid eligibility, claims, enrollment, and payment data across backend systems
  • Perform ETL and data warehouse testing including sourcetotarget
  • Validation and reconciliation
  • Write and execute complex SQL to validate data integrity, transformations, and business rules
  • Validate batch jobs, data feeds, and scheduled processing pipelines
  • Test HIPAA EDI transactions (270/271, 276/277, 834, 835, 837, 820)
  • Perform backend and datacentric API testing (REST/SOAP) where applicable
  • Identify data quality issues such as duplicates, nulls, mismatches, and threshold failures
  • Own defect lifecycle management from identification through resolution
  • Support UAT and production data validation
  • Partner closely with data engineers, developers, and QA leads

Required Experience
  • 8+ years of QA experience with a strong backend and data focus
  • Handson ETL and data warehouse testing experience
  • Advanced SQL skills (write, debug, validate, reconcile)
  • Medicaid and MMIS system experience
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data and HIPAA EDI transactions
  • Experience validating batch processing and large datasets
  • Experience working in Agile and/or Waterfall environments
  • Experience with tools such as JIRA, ALM, XRAY, Postman
Nice to Have
  • QA Lead or senior ownership experience
  • Mainframe data exposure (COBOL / DB2 / batch jobs)
  • State Medicaid or government healthcare project experience

Additional Notes:
  • This role is heavily backend and datafocused. It is best suited for candidates with deep Medicaid domain knowledge and strong QA validation experience, not frontend or UIonly testers.
Onboarding: Background Check and Drug Screen required
