They typically work under the supervision of more experienced estate planning attorneys and help research, draft documents, and communicate with clients. Their role is essential in helping individuals and families protect their wealth and provide for their loved ones.

What are some typical challenges faced by Estate Planning Associates when working with clients?

Estate Planning Associates frequently encounter the challenge of translating complex legal and tax concepts into clear, actionable strategies for clients from diverse backgrounds. They must balance sensitive family dynamics and confidentiality concerns while ensuring that all documentation accurately reflects the client's wishes. Additionally, staying current with changing laws and regulations is crucial for providing compliant and effective advice. Collaboration with senior attorneys, financial advisors, and clients' family members is often necessary to create robust, comprehensive estate plans.

Estate Planning & Family Formation Associate

Location: Chapel Hill, NC (Hybrid: 4 Days In-Office, Fridays Remote)

Salary: Competitive Pay Structure (Commensurate with experience)

Key Perks: Fully Paid Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance | On-Site Gym Access (24/7) | Daily Breakfast & Snacks Provided

The Opportunity

An established, highly respected, client-centric law firm in Chapel Hill is seeking an experienced Estate Planning Attorney to spearhead, manage, and scale its growing estate planning practice. This is an entrepreneurial, front-facing role designed for a high-potential attorney who wants to move away from rigid, high-volume environments and into a meaningful leadership position.

In addition to leading the core estate planning division, you will have the unique opportunity to support the firm's progressive Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and family formation practice, drafting surrogacy and donor agreements for diverse families. This firm offers a balanced, manageable workload with zero nights or weekends, complete operational infrastructure, and a clear path to shape workflows and templates.

Core Responsibilities

  • Practice Leadership: Serve as the lead attorney for all estate planning matters, shaping workflows, templates, and client experience standards.
  • Document Architecture: Draft and review sophisticated wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, and foundational planning documents.
  • Family Formation Support: Advise on and draft surrogacy agreements, donor agreements, and related contracts for clients utilizing assisted reproduction.
  • Client Engagement: Manage high-touch client relationships directly from initial consultation through final plan delivery.
  • Business Development: Leverage firm-backed marketing, existing client infrastructure, and referrals to expand the practice area's local footprint.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience: 4+ years of hands-on estate planning and asset protection experience within a law firm setting.
  • Licensure: Active member of the North Carolina State Bar in good standing.
  • Practice Areas: Substantive expertise in core estate planning; prior exposure to or a strong interest in ART, surrogacy, or family law is preferred.
  • Culture & Alignment: Strong commitment to inclusivity, particularly affirming and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
  • Work Structure: Ability to work in-person from the Chapel Hill office Monday through Thursday, with remote flexibility on Fridays.
