Estate Planning Associate information

What is an estate planning associate?

Estate Planning Associates are legal professionals who assist clients with organizing their assets and preparing legal documents, such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, to ensure their wishes are carried out after death or in the event of incapacity. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced estate planning attorneys and help research, draft documents, and communicate with clients. Their role is essential in helping individuals and families protect their wealth and provide for their loved ones.

What are some typical challenges faced by estate planning associates when working with clients?

Estate Planning Associates frequently encounter the challenge of translating complex legal and tax concepts into clear, actionable strategies for clients from diverse backgrounds. They must balance sensitive family dynamics and confidentiality concerns while ensuring that all documentation accurately reflects the client's wishes. Additionally, staying current with changing laws and regulations is crucial for providing compliant and effective advice. Collaboration with senior attorneys, financial advisors, and clients' family members is often necessary to create robust, comprehensive estate plans.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an estate planning associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Estate Planning Associate, you need a law degree, bar admission, and a solid understanding of trusts, wills, tax law, and probate procedures. Familiarity with legal research platforms (like Westlaw or LexisNexis) and document drafting software is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, discretion, and attention to detail help build client trust and manage sensitive financial information. These competencies ensure accurate, compliant estate plans and foster long-term client relationships.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Associate Attorney to join our litigation team, focused primarily on Insurance Defense and Civil Litigation. New admittees with strong litigation internship or clerkship experience are welcome to apply — we value potential as much as tenure.
The ideal candidate is an independent thinker who communicates clearly, manages their docket proactively, and is eager to develop their skills alongside experienced trial attorneys across a variety of matters.

  • Business & Corporate Law
  • Real Estate Law
  • Administrative Law
  • Trusts & Estate Planning

  • Draft and respond to written discovery, motions, and pleadings
  • Conduct depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts
  • Appear at hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials
  • Communicate effectively with insurance carrier clients and claims adjusters regarding case strategy and reserve recommendations
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case evaluations and status reports
  • Manage litigation deadlines and maintain accurate billing records in case management software
  • Collaborate with partners and senior associates on litigation strategy

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Active Nevada law license — or eligibility to sit for the Nevada Bar (new admittees welcome)
  • Experience in insurance defense, civil litigation, or a related litigation internship/clerkship
  • Familiarity with depositions, written discovery, and motion practice
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a high-volume caseload
  • Proficiency with legal practice management software (Clio experience a plus)
  • Collaborative mindset and team-oriented work style

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience appearing in Nevada state and federal courts
  • Familiarity with Nevada insurance regulations and coverage issues
  • Prior clerkship or internship with an insurance defense or civil litigation firm

Compensation & Benefits
  • Black & Graf offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, including:
  • Base salary of $95,000–$130,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off and firm holidays
  • Professional development and mentorship opportunities

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage early submission. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
