Job description

Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions Inc. seeks a full-time Area Sales Manager to join our Alabama team. The Area Sales Manager position will provide business development, sales, and technical service to customers and potential customers throughout his/her area.

Area Sales Manager Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Services existing accounts, obtains orders, and establishes new accounts by planning and organizing daily work schedules to call on existing or potential customers.
  • Focuses sales efforts by being a resource and studying existing and potential customer's business model.
  • Keeps management informed by submitting activity reports (bi-weekly basis), work plans, and monthly/annual territory analyses.
  • Provides historical records by maintaining records on area and customer sales.
  • Optimizes the existing terminal network with the other regional ASMs and RSMs on all products (Highest profitable netback).
  • Defines specialty product opportunities with current portfolio based on profitability and probability of success.
  • Focuses resources on priorities for the defined market area.
  • Communicate priorities and focus with Regional Sales Manager.
  • Manages/understands costs (opts., selling, tech., RMC, opportunity cost of time and resources).
  • Proactively manages our position and runouts, at defined terminals.
  • Monitors competition by gathering current marketplace information on pricing, products, new products, delivery schedules, etc.
  • Recommend product, service, and policy changes by evaluating results and competitive developments based on regional strategies.
  • Resolves customer complaints by investigating problems, developing solutions, preparing reports, and making management recommendations.
  • Assists the Ergon's Technical Marketing Manager in identifying, coordinating, participating in, and supporting the establishment and maintenance of relationships with key state, district, and local specifying agencies' personnel.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, exhibiting/sponsoring at industry trade shows, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional and industry associations.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Takes ownership of the business in his/her area.
  • Provides communication to operations on forecasting and current status on volume.
  • Services customers to include visits to all levels of the key customers. This includes senior management, project estimators, project managers, and project foremen.
  • Services the Counties/Cities to include visits to all levels within the County/City Government structure such as Supervisors/Councilmen, Road Managers, County/City Engineers and County crews performing work.
  • Assists Ergon's Technical Marketing Manager in maintaining relationships with the agency contacts in their area.

Area Sales Manager Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 1-3 years of experience; or 5 years of experience with no degree.
  • Preferred area of study: Marketing or Business
  • Industry Knowledge Desired
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and able to bend, stoop and kneel as needed.
  • Able to wear proper PPE when required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires working in office conditions, performing some clerical work, working periodically outside in a manufacturing plant environment, with and around operational process equipment in temperature extremes for periods of time.
  • Able to work around asphalt and other related chemicals on an ongoing basis.
  • Able to provide job site and field support of projects.
  • Able and willing to travel for business needs. The travel expectation for this position is 2 nights on average per week.
