What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Epilepsy position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epileptologist (an epilepsy specialist), a medical degree with board certification in neurology and subspecialty training in epilepsy are essential. Familiarity with EEG interpretation, neuroimaging, and seizure monitoring technologies, along with licensure and membership in professional organizations like the American Epilepsy Society, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, compassionate patient care, and collaborative communication skills make a practitioner stand out. These skills are vital for accurately diagnosing, treating, and supporting patients with complex seizure disorders within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

What is an Epilepsy job?

An Epilepsy job typically refers to a role in the medical field focused on diagnosing, treating, and researching epilepsy. Professionals in this area may include neurologists, epileptologists, researchers, or specialized nurses who work with patients experiencing seizures. They conduct diagnostic tests, prescribe treatments, and provide education to patients and caregivers. These jobs are often found in hospitals, research institutions, or specialized epilepsy centers.

What are typical daily responsibilities for an Epileptologist working in a clinical setting?

Epileptologists typically spend their days evaluating new and established patients, interpreting diagnostic tests such as EEGs and MRIs, and developing individualized treatment plans for seizure management. They frequently consult with referring physicians, collaborate with neurosurgeons and nurses, and may participate in multidisciplinary case conferences. Additional responsibilities can include educating patients and their families about epilepsy, staying updated with the latest research, and occasionally being involved in clinical trials or teaching. The work environment is fast-paced and collaborative, providing ongoing learning and professional growth opportunities.

Position Summary
Position Summary
A post-doctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Makram Obeid. The postdoctoral fellow will test research hypotheses in rodent seizure models and cell cultures, primarily utilizing molecular and cell biology techniques. The Obeid lab investigates the mechanisms of seizure emergence and their effects on cognitive and behavioral neurodevelopment in rodent seizure models. Our primary goal is to identify molecular targets for novel treatment strategies. The laboratory employs a variety of molecular techniques, longterm continuous EEG monitoring in rodents, and neurobehavioral testing panels. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to independently plan and conduct experiments under the guidance of the PI, using molecular and cellular biology techniques that include, but are not limited to, cell culture, western blotting, PCR, gene knockdown and overexpression, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. Laboratory work will involve animal handling and the potential participation in neurobehavioral testing. Work may also involve electrode implantation surgery and EEG recording in rodents (initially semi-independently under the PI's supervision). The postdoctoral fellow is expected to collect and analyze data, summarize findings, and participate/assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and possibly grants. The duties also include training lab personal, participating in laboratory and equipment maintenance, ordering supplies as needed, performing literature review, updating research protocols and design, and potentially developing new ideas that serve the research goals set by the PI.
IUSM is committed to being a welcoming campus community and we seek candidates whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts contribute to robust learning and working environments for all students, staff, and faculty. Practical experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques, such as tissue cultures, western blotting, genetic manipulation (knock down, knockout, and overexpression) is required. The successful candidate has peer-reviewed publications, with excellent English speaking and writing skills. Experience in neuroscience research, epilepsy, animal handling and behavioral testing is highly preferred. Preference will be given to highly motivated recent graduates with a record that demonstrates scientific independence, creativity, initiative, and career motivation.
