The Opportunity 

As one of the Senior Toxicologists, you will provide scientific and technical leadership supporting the development of systematic evidence maps, literature reviews, evidence syntheses, and health hazard assessments. Working closely with the Principal Investigator and multidisciplinary scientific teams, you will lead toxicological evaluations, interpret complex scientific evidence, and contribute to the development of high-quality technical reports and peer-reviewed publications supporting federal decision-making. This role supports the same evidence evaluation and health hazard assessment activities led by the Principal Investigator. Candidates from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC area are preferred in this role.

This role is contingent upon award of the project. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior toxicology subject matter expert supporting systematic reviews, evidence synthesis activities, and health hazard assessments.
  • Lead the evaluation and interpretation of toxicological, epidemiological, mechanistic, and exposure science data from human, animal, and in vitro studies.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of systematic evidence mapping, scoping reviews, and systematic review protocols.
  • Conduct and oversee study screening, data extraction, study quality evaluation, and weight-of-evidence assessments.
  • Apply toxicological principles and evidence evaluation frameworks to characterize potential human health hazards and environmental risks.
  • Draft, review, and contribute to Technical Reports, Toxicity Reports, DART Reports, Immunotoxicity Reports, Research Reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and other scientific publications. 
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and project leadership to ensure scientific rigor, methodological consistency, and quality assurance across project deliverables. 
  • Support interactions with the client federal partners, scientific advisory groups, and external peer reviewers.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior scientists and research staff.
  • Contribute expertise to interdisciplinary teams including epidemiologists, exposure scientists, pathologists, statisticians, and data scientists.
  • Evaluate and utilize innovative approaches, including AI-enabled literature review tools, machine learning applications, natural language processing technologies, and data visualization methods to enhance scientific review processes. 
  • Participate in project planning, technical risk mitigation, and quality control activities to ensure timely delivery of contract requirements.

What We Value

  • Master's degree + 13 years or PhD + 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Degree in Toxicology, Environmental Health, Pharmacology, Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting toxicological evaluations, health hazard assessments, risk assessments, or environmental health research.
  • Strong knowledge of systematic review methodologies, evidence evaluation approaches, and scientific literature assessment.
  • Experience interpreting toxicological data from animal studies, epidemiological investigations, exposure assessments, and mechanistic research.
  • Strong technical writing skills with a track record of scientific publications, technical reports, or regulatory submissions.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary scientific teams.
  • Familiarity with literature review automation tools, evidence management platforms, and advanced data analysis techniques.
  • Excellent verbal communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT) certification preferred.
  • Experience supporting NIEHS, NTP, EPA, FDA, CDC, NIH, or other federal health and environmental agencies.
  • Expertise in developmental and reproductive toxicology, immunotoxicology, carcinogenicity, or other specialized toxicology disciplines.
  • Experience with AI-enabled evidence synthesis, machine learning applications, or natural language processing tools in scientific research.

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $109,898  to $175,837and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location.  Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
