Job description

SUMMARY

Heluna Health and the Occupational Health Branch (OHB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are seeking an Epidemiologist to join the California Safe Cosmetics Program (CSCP). ย 

CSCP is a multidisciplinary team that includes research scientists, analysts, and communications staff. The Programโ€™s primary purpose is to collect information on hazardous ingredients in cosmetic products sold in California and to make this information available to the public. The Epidemiologist supports CSCPโ€™s goals by researching and analyzing data on chemical ingredients and exposures in workers and other consumers.

This position is funded through 6/30/2028.

Salary Range: $80,000- $100,000 annually depending on experience/qualifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads projects; makes recommendations and decisions regarding methods, specific procedures to be utilized, and activities regarding new and ongoing research projects.
  • Collaborates with other staff in the Program and may contribute to multiple projects.
  • Conducts analysis of data, interprets results, and disseminates findings to stakeholders in reports, web pages, or scientific abstracts and journals.
  • Reviews scientific literature to maintain and develop professional skills in the areas of occupational/environmental epidemiology, exposure science, and statistical methods.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in the fundamentals and principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health; fluent with current, state-of-the-art statistical methods.
  • Experience designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, ideally in an occupational or environmental health setting.
  • Ability and experience analyzing and interpreting complex data.
  • Experience linking large datasets is desirable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to communicate complex topics to both scientific and lay audiences.
  • Knowledge of current developments in public health.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

ย Education/Experience

  • Completed Ph.D. in Epidemiology or related field, or a Master of Public Health (MPH) or related masterโ€™s degree, with additional experience and an emphasis in environmental or occupational epidemiology.
  • At least two years of post-graduate experience in public health is desirable.
  • Evidence of prior publications, as a primary or co-author is desirable.
  • Knowledge and use of statistical software such as Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) or R is required. Proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL) is desirable.
  • Proficiency with data visualization software is desirable.
