What is an environmental summer?

Environmental summer jobs are short-term positions, typically offered during the summer months, that focus on protecting, studying, or improving the environment. These jobs may include roles in conservation, environmental education, research, fieldwork, or community outreach. They are popular among students and recent graduates who want hands-on experience in environmental science, sustainability, or related fields. Such roles can be found with government agencies, nonprofits, research institutions, and private companies.

What types of projects might I work on during an environmental summer, and how do these experiences contribute to my professional development?

In an Environmental Summer role, you may participate in projects such as field data collection, environmental impact assessments, community outreach, or laboratory research. These projects often require teamwork, critical thinking, and adaptability, providing hands-on experience with real-world environmental challenges. Engaging in such work can help you build valuable technical and communication skills, deepen your understanding of environmental science, and expand your professional network, all of which are beneficial for future career opportunities in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental summer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Summer Intern, you generally need coursework in environmental science or related fields, strong research abilities, and basic data analysis skills. Familiarity with tools such as GIS software, Microsoft Excel, and possibly lab equipment or field sampling instruments is often required. Job description

Description:

Sher Edling LLP is seeking law students to join our mission-driven team dedicated to protecting people and the planet for 2027 summer associate positions. Candidates must be 2Ls or 3Ls during the 2026-2027 academic year.

Sher Edling is at the forefront of litigation to hold polluters accountable for damages inflicted on communities, including cases across the country involving climate deception and drinking water contamination. Summer associates work on those high-impact environmental and consumer protection cases representing states, tribes, and local governments. They are integrated into the day-to-day work of the firm and contribute to cases across all phases of litigation, including investigation, motion practice, discovery, hearing preparation, and appeal. The assignments typically involve in-depth research and writing and creative problem-solving. Where appropriate, summer associates are involved in court appearances, depositions, and firm and client meetings, and are also invited to join the firm’s various social activities.

The firm chooses summer associates based on research and writing ability, academic record, and commitment to the work of the firm. Sher Edling is an equal opportunity employer highly committed to diversity among our lawyers and staff, and to fostering a collaborative and supportive workplace.

Law students who have a minimum of ten weeks to commit in the summer are eligible to apply. Interested applicants should submit their:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Recent writing sample (preferably a legal brief or memorandum of no more than 10 pages that primarily reflects your work)
  • Current law school transcript

The firm offers a hybrid work environment for summer associates, working out of our San Francisco office at least two days a week. Other remote work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applications must be received by August 15. Early applications are encouraged, and we will consider applications on a rolling basis.
