Job description

The purpose of this position is to supervise, schedule, and develop EVS staff to meet the needs of patients, visitors, and staff. . This position is responsible for providing direct supervision over EVS Technicians, assigning work, developing staff schedules, addressing patient and visitor requests, ensuring the completion of work to the standard, and ensuring excellence in maintaining a clean, safe, orderly and attractive patient care environment. In addition, this position is charged with upholding the mission of the department and organization through continuous improvement.


Operations

  • Manages and supervises departmental staff by confirming, validating and teaching staff to uphold the department mission: provide an exceptional patient experience; ensure a clean environment that does not contribute to the spread of healthcare associated infection; and to facilitate timely patient flow.
  • Ensures staffing assignments are complete to avoid missed assignments and/or unnecessary use of premium pay. 
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the hospital bed tracking system (Epic) and ensures response times are met. 
  • Manages staffing and the operations to allow for breaks and lunches that are consistent with Oregon Law, OHSU policy, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Ensures accurate timekeeping for staff. 
  • Demonstrates strong team player skills and the ability to work harmoniously with a diverse workforce.
  • Manages and maintain pager and closet keys controls for the department shift.
  • Maintains employee records per OHSU policy.

2. Staff Engagement

  • Assists in creating an employment environment that supports a knowledgeable, passionate, productive, safe, and engaged staff.
  • Develops one on one rapport and professional relationship with all direct reports.
  • Assists department management with hiring staff.
  • Responsible for delivery and documentation of performance management:  evaluations, recognition, coaching and progressive discipline.
  • Provides training, coaching and instruction of department changes.
  • Assists with New Employee Orientation.
  • Swiftly identifies and resolves interpersonal conflict. 

3. Patient Experience

  • Ensures an exceptional experience for our patients and visitors.
  • Rounds on patients and facility to ensure service quality.
  • Interviews patients, as necessary, to ensure exceptional experience.
  • Serves consistently as a liaison between all shifts.
  • Provides service recovery as needed.
  • Manages up employees and colleagues.     

4. Quality & Safety

  • Provides a safe environment for patient care.
  • Ensures staff compliance to standard work by reviewing and confirming on a consistent basis.
  • Rounds on EVS staff, nurse managers, and key internal customers on a daily basis.
  • Provides in servicing on equipment, chemicals and standards.   
  • Inspects room cleanliness upon discharge per departmental expectations.
  • Follows up on patient safety incident reports per organizational expectations.
  • Ensures all staff are in compliance with departmental policies, training, and procedures. 
  • Monitors and audits equipment for cleanliness and proper set up:  chemicals labeled, solutions adequately dispensed; and tools cleaned and properly stored on cart.
  • Ensure staff have the necessary tools and supplies to successfully perform their duties.
  • Submits work orders for maintenance repairs, as needed.
  • Attends all departmental meetings.     

5. Performance Improvement

  • Engages in process improvement by suggesting ways to improve departmental performance
  • Partners with other OHSU departments to improve patient care and throughput 

  • High School Diploma 

  • 5 years of lead or supervisory experience; or

  • 2 years of lead or supervisory experience with an Associate’s degree;

  • 1 year of lead or supervisory experience with a Bachelor’s degree.

  • Customer service focus

  • Proficient skills in English language: reading, writing, verbal

  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and follow through all assigned tasks

  • Ability to self-manage

  • Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, ability to learn and operate various software programs

  • Experience in academic healthcare or other matrix organizations

  • Experience in union environment

  • CHEST Certification
