What Do Environmental Scientists Do?

Environmental scientists conduct research designed to recognize hazardous conditions that affect the environment or public health, such as pollution or water contamination, and suggest ways to control or remove them. This research generally involves collecting and analyzing various environmental samples, examining published data from other scientists, and exploring connections between the results and human activity. Environmental scientists need to be excellent communicators and writers, preparing reports, research papers, and presentations that demonstrate and defend their findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Scientist, you need a solid background in environmental science or related fields, strong analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental modeling tools, and data analysis programs is often required, along with relevant certifications like HAZWOPER. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for collaboration and effective reporting. These competencies are vital for accurately assessing environmental issues, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving impactful solutions.

What are some common challenges Environmental Scientists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Environmental Scientists often collaborate with professionals from engineering, policy, and public health backgrounds. A common challenge is translating scientific findings into actionable recommendations that are understandable to non-scientists. Balancing differing priorities, such as regulatory compliance versus environmental protection, can also create tension. Effective communication and adaptability are essential for ensuring that environmental concerns are accurately represented and integrated into broader project goals.

What are Environmental Scientists?

Environmental Scientists are professionals who study the environment and find ways to protect it from pollution and other hazards. They analyze air, water, and soil samples to identify environmental problems and develop solutions to minimize human impact on the environment. Their work often involves conducting research, preparing reports, and advising organizations and governments on environmental policies. Environmental Scientists play a crucial role in sustainability and conservation efforts worldwide.

What type of work do environmental scientists do?

Environmental scientists analyze environmental data, conduct fieldwork, and develop solutions to environmental problems such as pollution, waste management, and conservation. They often use tools like GIS and require knowledge of environmental regulations, working in labs, offices, or outdoor settings to assess and address ecological issues.

What is the difference between Environmental Scientist vs Environmental Technician?

Our team supports diverse clients across the Puget Sound region with expertise, integrity, and a collaborative spirit.

Soundview Consultants is adding an Environmental Scientist to add to our Northwest team! This position, based out of our Gig Harbor or Mount Vernon office, supports science-based environmental consulting services through field investigations, data analysis, technical reporting, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Primary areas of practice include wetlands, streams, shorelines, fish and wildlife habitats, and other regulated environmental resources.

What will I be doing?

  • Conduct local and regional field investigations, including wetland delineation, ordinary high water (OHW) determinations, monitoring studies, and habitat assessments, working independently or under supervision based on experience level.
  • Collect, document, and manage field data, including soils, hydrology, vegetation inventories, photo documentation, and site observations.
  • Accurately complete field reconnaissance and assessments with understanding of project goals, regulatory context, and technical requirements.
  • Conduct site visits with reviewing regulatory agencies and Tribes to support project needs and defend field assessments/delineations.
  • Assess and categorize wetland functions using applicable Washington State Wetland Rating Systems
  • Classify wetlands using hydrogeomorphic (HGM) and Cowardin classification systems.
  • Review and interpret background information such as topographic maps, aerial imagery, National Wetland Inventory data, Salmonscape data, and similar resources.
  • Prepare and /or provide technical review/QC of permit applications and technical deliverables including maps, figures, wetland reports, habitat assessments, mitigation plans, and other environmental documentation, demonstrating strong scientific writing and consistency.
  • Utilize GIS, GPS, and related technologies for mapping and data visualization as applicable.

What qualifications are required for this role?

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Fisheries, Ecology, Botany, Geology, or related discipline required.
  • Three (3) to five (5) plus years of professional experience in environmental science, policy, or planning associated with land use, commensurate with role level.
  • Prior environmental consulting experience preferred.
  • Wetland Professional in Training (WPIT) or Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental science principles and regulations related to wetlands, streams, shorelines, habitats, and land use.
  • Experience performing wetland delineations using the USACE Wetlands Delineation Manual and applicable Regional Supplements, commensurate with experience level.
  • Identification knowledge of Washington State plant species.
  • Ability to make hydric soil determinations.
  • Familiarity with ordinary high-water determinations and regional assessment methods.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including preparation of environmental reports and supporting documentation.
  • Ability to conduct independent research, analysis, and problem solving.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and GPS preferred.

The hour rate for this position is $36.00 โ€“ $46.00 depending on education and experience.
