Note: This position is being advertised within the identified Career Pathway; however, staffing assignments are subject to student enrollment, program needs, and district priorities. The successful candidate may be required to teach courses or fulfill instructional responsibilities within other areas of the Skilled and Technical Sciences (STS) cluster or a closely related field, as determined by the District.ย 

Position Summary: The Plant Science Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in Plant Science and/or related agricultural courses while creating a safe, engaging, and student-centered learning environment. The successful candidate will prepare students for postsecondary education and careers in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, and related industries through classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and real-world applications.

This position requires collaboration with students, families, staff, business and industry partners, and community organizations to support student achievement and program growth. The teacher will serve as the school's FFA Advisor, promote student leadership and career development opportunities, maintain instructional facilities and equipment, and support work-based learning experiences. The Plant Science Teacher will also lead efforts to expand and strengthen the pathway through student recruitment, advisory committee engagement, industry partnerships, and continuous program improvement.

Qualifications:ย 

  • Candidates must have industry experience in the field of plant science and/or hold teacher certification as outlined below.
  • Teacher Certification: Hold or be eligible for a valid Delaware Teacher Standard Certificate in accordance with 14 Del. C. ย 1559 Skilled and Technical Science Teacherย

Performance Responsibilities:ย This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or ability associated with this role but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.

  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment that is safe, positive, and conducive to learning.
  • Provide instruction in Plant Science and/or related agricultural courses using a variety of teaching strategies and instructional resources.
  • Implement district curriculum, instructional goals, and educational philosophy.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessments.
  • Communicate regularly with students and families regarding academic progress and program opportunities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support student achievement and continuous program improvement.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities, professional development, and ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Serve as the school's FFA Advisor and support student participation in FFA activities, leadership opportunities, and competitions.
  • Support students participating in local and state FFA events and career development activities.
  • Lead and promote the Plant Science pathway by recruiting students and advocating for program growth and success.
  • Attend state and local Career and Technical Education meetings, trainings, and professional development activities as needed.
  • Collaborate with Milford School District STS teachers to align curriculum and support student transitions into the high school program.
  • Recruit and work with an advisory committee to support program development and industry connections.
  • Coordinate and facilitate an annual advisory committee meeting.
  • Manage program funds, grants, donations, and fundraising activities in accordance with district procedures.
  • Maintain Plant Science instructional areas, laboratories, equipment, materials, tools, and resources.
  • Support students in obtaining work-based learning experiences, internships, cooperative learning experiences, and supervised agricultural experiences when available.
  • Develop partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and agricultural industry representatives.
  • Incorporate real-world agricultural, horticultural, environmental, and plant science applications into instruction.
  • Utilize laboratory equipment and scientific investigations to enhance student learning when appropriate.
  • Share knowledge and experience related to plant science, crop production, soils, horticulture, agricultural technology, and related fields.
  • Assist in upholding school rules, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Be available to students and parents for educational purposes outside the instructional day when reasonably requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator or designee.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually according to the Board's policy on professional personnel evaluation.

Terms of Employment:ย Twelve month (12) full-time employee.
