The Environmental Services (EVS) Training Specialist is responsible for the onboarding, training, and ongoing development of all EVS colleagues and leaders. This role ensures all required annual competencies, computer-based learning (CBL) assignments, and training records are completed, maintained, and audit-ready in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.

The Training Specialist coordinates and oversees colleague development programs, retention initiatives, patient experience education, and compliance with OSHA, infection prevention, and other applicable regulatory standards. This position serves as the department's subject matter expert for training and education while promoting a culture of continuous learning, safety, and operational excellence.

Additionally, the EVS Training Specialist develops, reviews, and recommends departmental policies, procedures, and standard work practices to ensure consistency, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The role collaborates closely with EVS leadership to support quality improvement initiatives, monitor training effectiveness, identify performance gaps, and implement educational strategies that enhance colleague engagement, operational performance, and patient satisfaction.

As a key member of the EVS leadership team, the Training Specialist provides leadership support, mentors colleagues, and partners with internal departments to ensure the Environmental Services team is equipped to deliver exceptional service and maintain a safe, clean, and healing environment.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in a related field required. A high school diploma with three years of training or leadership experience in an entry-level role may be considered in lieu of an associate degree.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • CHESP or T-CHEST certification preferred.
  • If required by the position and/or work location, must possess a valid driver's license and meet Memorial Health System Fleet Safety Policy standards, including successful completion of a five-year Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle with proof of insurance.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of customer service experience.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience in an entry-level operation setting.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and process management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Windows applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate conflict effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive oversight and support for new hires throughout the onboarding, orientation, and training process.
  • Conducts initial assessments to evaluate new hire readiness, learning ability, and competency development; partners with EVS supervisors to support first-year performance evaluations.
  • Collaborates with Colleague Resources, Organizational Development, Infection Prevention, and EVS leadership to ensure orientation and technical training programs align with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Prepares and presents monthly reports to the department director related to training completion, colleague engagement, safety activities, competency outcomes, and other departmental education metrics.
  • Researches, coordinates, and implements EVS training programs and systems, including new supplies and equipment, cleaning and disinfection standards, operational protocols, auditing tools, competencies, job aids, in-services, skills labs, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) regarding EVS operations, regulatory compliance, infection prevention practices, and training methodologies.
  • Promotes a culture focused on safety, infection prevention, hand hygiene compliance, patient experience excellence, colleague engagement, and retention.
  • Coordinates and facilitates weekly EVS colleague huddles in partnership with the department director and operations manager to communicate operational updates, benefit information, facility events, safety topics, and departmental initiatives.
  • Partners with EVS supervisors to coordinate new hire unit placement and assignment decisions, ensuring appropriate training support and skill alignment.
  • Maintains ownership of EVS training materials, onboarding resources, and on-the-job training processes, ensuring content remains current, effective, and aligned with departmental standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.
