How much do environmental rehabilitation jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for environmental rehabilitation in the United States is $22.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $25.24 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in environmental rehabilitation projects?

Professionals in environmental rehabilitation often encounter challenges such as balancing ecological goals with budget and time constraints, dealing with unpredictable weather or site conditions, and navigating complex regulatory requirements. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including ecologists, engineers, and local stakeholders—can also present communication and coordination hurdles. However, these challenges are typically addressed through careful planning, adaptive management strategies, and ongoing stakeholder engagement, making the work both dynamic and rewarding.

What is the difference between Environmental Rehabilitation vs Environmental Restoration?

AspectEnvironmental RehabilitationEnvironmental Restoration
CertificationsEnvironmental Science, Ecology, or related degrees; certifications like Certified EcologistSimilar certifications; often includes environmental science or ecology credentials
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, site assessments, project planning in natural settingsFieldwork, site analysis, implementing restoration projects in natural or degraded areas
Employer & Industry UsageEnvironmental consulting firms, government agencies, NGOsEnvironmental agencies, conservation organizations, consulting firms

Environmental Rehabilitation focuses on restoring ecosystems and habitats to a healthy state, often involving land management and ecological interventions. Environmental Restoration emphasizes repairing specific environmental damage, such as polluted sites or degraded landscapes. While both roles require similar skills and certifications, Rehabilitation has a broader scope, including habitat creation and land management, whereas Restoration targets specific damage repair projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in environmental rehabilitation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Environmental Rehabilitation, you need a strong background in environmental science, ecology, or related fields, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, environmental monitoring equipment, and restoration planning tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, implementing, and managing effective restoration projects that restore ecosystems and ensure regulatory compliance.

What is environmental rehabilitation?

Environmental rehabilitation is the process of restoring damaged or degraded natural environments to a healthier, more sustainable state. This can involve activities such as replanting native vegetation, removing invasive species, cleaning up pollution, and restoring wildlife habitats. The goal is to help ecosystems recover their natural functions and support biodiversity. Environmental rehabilitation is crucial for reversing the impacts of human activities like mining, deforestation, and industrial pollution. Professionals in this field often work with governments, non-profits, and communities to design and implement restoration projects.
