What is an environmental project manager?

As an environmental project manager, you work on construction, waste management, and engineering projects with the goal of assessing the ecological impact of the work and reporting it to the relevant regulatory agencies. Your duties involve suggesting and investigating methods for mitigating environmental impact and developing best practices for project managers to follow. Educational qualifications include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental sciences or project management. Prior work experience in engineering or construction will set you ahead of other candidates and allow you to gather the knowledge and skills required to work on larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental project manager?

To thrive as an Environmental Project Manager, you need a strong background in environmental science or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree or certification like PMP or environmental certifications. Familiarity with environmental regulations, project management software (such as MS Project), and data analysis tools is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, stakeholders, and complex projects effectively. These skills ensure regulatory compliance, project success, and positive environmental impact in a highly regulated and multidisciplinary field.

What are some of the key challenges environmental project managers face when balancing project objectives with regulatory compliance?

Environmental Project Managers often navigate the challenge of aligning project goals with complex environmental regulations and stakeholder expectations. This requires staying current with evolving local, state, and federal laws, coordinating with regulatory agencies, and ensuring that project timelines and budgets accommodate permitting and compliance requirements. Effective communication and proactive planning are essential to anticipate potential roadblocks and integrate sustainable practices without compromising project deliverables. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams helps ensure all regulatory and environmental considerations are addressed throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Manager - Civil & Environmental

Cedarville Engineering Group

Pottstown, PA

Full-time

Re-posted 17 days ago

Job description

CEG
Project Manager
Own the Project. Deliver the Outcome.
About CEG
Cedarville Engineering Group (CEG) delivers design-build civil infrastructure and environmental remediation projects for federal agencies, including work on active military installations. Our projects directly support national defense, environmental restoration, and resilient infrastructure. We are a 50-person firm with offices in Pottstown, PA, Tampa, FL, and Northern VA. Our mission is to improve the life through infrastructure.
The Role
We are seeking a Project Manager to take projects from kickoff to closeout — on time, on budget, and to standard. This is a hands-on role in a lean firm where the PM owns the outcome: you build the plan, manage the resources, hold the schedule, and keep clients and the government confident in the work.
This is real project ownership on government infrastructure and environmental projects:
  • Project planning, scheduling, and execution from inception to completion
  • Resource, subcontractor, and vendor coordination
  • Client and stakeholder management — updates, expectations, and change
  • Risk identification and mitigation, safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Based in Pottstown, PA or Northern VA, with travel to project sites as needed
What This Role Really Is
You are the person who owns the outcome.
You ensure:
  • Projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality
  • Risks are identified early and handled before they become problems
  • Clients, stakeholders, and the government stay informed and confident in the work
You are independent but embedded with the team. You do not create bureaucracy — you build and run projects that let the business keep winning and delivering work.
What You'll DoProject Execution
  • Lead project planning sessions and develop detailed project schedules
  • Oversee execution to ensure adherence to timelines, scope, and objectives
  • Allocate and manage resources, including coordinating with subcontractors and vendors
Client amp; Stakeholder Management
  • Engage clients and stakeholders to provide updates, manage expectations, and address concerns or changes
  • Prepare and present regular project status reports highlighting progress, issues, and risks
  • Build strong relationships that contribute to CEG’s growth and repeat work
Quality, Risk amp; Compliance
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality standards and client specifications through regular reviews and inspections
  • Proactively identify and assess project risks and implement mitigation strategies
  • Maintain safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance across the project
What You BringEducation (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Studies, Construction Management, or a related field
Experience
  • Generally 5+ years of relevant project management or technical project experience
  • Track record delivering projects on time, on budget, and to quality standards
  • Experience managing resources, subcontractors, and vendors
Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license
  • OSHA 10/30/40-hour certification — CEG will provide training if not already held
Preferred
  • Experience with federal contracting is highly desirable
  • Project management certification (PMP) or eligibility
  • PE, PG, or similar professional license encouraged
  • USACE QA/QC certification
Capabilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication — you can brief a client and a crew with equal clarity
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a team-driven environment
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and to obtain access to secured federal and military installations as needed
What Matters Here – Our Core Values
  • Responsive – You communicate clearly and act quickly
  • Driven – You take ownership of outcomes
  • Problem-Solver – You fix gaps, not just document them
  • Growth Mindset – You keep learning and take on new skills as the work demands
  • No Assholes – We hold the line and treat people right
If you want to hand off the hard parts and point at someone else when a project slips, this is not the place for you.
If you take pride in owning a project and delivering it right — start to finish — you'll fit.
Work Environment
  • Based in the Pottstown, PA, or Northern Virginia
  • A mix of office work and on-site presence at project sites
  • Travel to project sites as needed
  • Some work supports projects on secured federal and military installations, which may require a federal background check and REAL ID
Why This Role Matters
Every project that lands on time, on budget, and to standard is the reason clients and the government come back to CEG.
Your role ensures:
  • Projects are delivered on the commitments we make
  • Clients and the government trust CEG to run the work
  • The business can grow on the back of projects that actually deliver
This is not busywork. This is infrastructure that improves the life.
CEG serves government and institutional clients through our core competencies of Engineering, Construction, and Environmental Services. We maintain offices in Pottstown, P, Tampa, FL, and Alexandria, VA with projects nationwide. CEG is committed to investing into the professional development of our Team, and in turn we seek employees who will invest in the success of our clients. Our rapid growth and success fuel our need to grow our team. WE LIVE OUR Core Values of RESPONSIVNESS, DRIVEN, GROWTH MINDSET, PROBLEM-SOVER, and we maintain a policy of NO ASSHOLES. Please submit your resume and to begin the journey.
