What is an environmental policy internship?

An Environmental Policy Internship is a short-term position, often held by students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience working with organizations focused on environmental legislation, advocacy, or research. Interns typically assist with policy analysis, research projects, public outreach, and administrative tasks. This role helps interns gain insight into how environmental policies are developed and implemented at local, state, or national levels, and can be a stepping stone for a career in environmental policy, law, or advocacy.

What types of projects or tasks does an environmental policy intern typically work on?

Environmental Policy Interns often support research and analysis of existing and proposed environmental regulations, help prepare policy briefs, and assist with stakeholder communications. Interns may also participate in drafting reports, attending meetings or public hearings, and collaborating with both internal teams and external partners such as government agencies or advocacy groups. This hands-on involvement provides valuable exposure to the policy-making process and helps build a foundation for future roles in environmental advocacy or public policy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental policy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Policy Intern, you need a solid understanding of environmental science, policy analysis, and research methods, typically supported by coursework in environmental studies or public policy. Familiarity with data analysis tools, policy databases, and Microsoft Office Suite is often expected. Strong written and verbal communication, analytical thinking, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for drafting reports and collaborating with stakeholders.
