What is an environmental health and safety intern?

An environmental health and safety intern supports environmental health and safety professionals as they work to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and worker injury regulations. You may work as part of an inspection or audit team, and you may support the process by completing administrative tasks such as filling out a Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Your responsibilities vary depending on the industry in which the company works and the expectations of your employers. You may help evaluate a workplace, or you may perform data entry and reporting duties.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an environmental health and safety intern?

As an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Intern, you can expect to assist with compliance audits, safety inspections, and risk assessments under the guidance of experienced EHS professionals. You'll likely help develop training materials, participate in incident investigations, and support initiatives to improve workplace safety and environmental sustainability. Interns often collaborate with various departments, such as operations and human resources, to implement EHS policies and best practices. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to regulatory compliance, reporting, and teamwork in a real-world setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental health and safety intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Health and Safety Intern, you typically need a background in environmental science, occupational health, or a related field, often supported by coursework or enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with regulatory standards like OSHA, MSDS databases, and incident reporting software is highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for identifying potential hazards, supporting compliance, and fostering a safe workplace environment.
