Manufacturing Engineer Intern (Paid)


Smith & Johnson Industries – Goshen, Indiana


Smith & Johnson Industries is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Manufacturing Engineer Intern to join our growing team in Goshen, Indiana. This is a paid internship opportunity focused on CNC programming, manufacturing optimization, and Lean process improvement within our solid surface countertop fabrication operation serving the RV and marine industries.


The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of CAD software and a strong interest in manufacturing engineering, CNC operations, and process optimization. This role offers hands-on experience in both programming and production environments while working directly with experienced manufacturing leadership.


Key Responsibilities


* Utilize CAD software and Vector VCarve to create and optimize CNC cutting programs for existing product SKUs

* Develop yield-optimized nesting layouts to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap

* Support Lean manufacturing initiatives focused on waste reduction and process efficiency

* Collaborate with production personnel to improve workflow between programming and manufacturing

* Review prints, DXF files, and customer specifications to ensure programming accuracy

* Assist with troubleshooting CNC programming and manufacturing issues as needed

* Participate in continuous improvement projects within the manufacturing operation

* Maintain organized program files, documentation, and revision controls


Qualifications


* Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar CAD/design software required

* Familiarity with CNC programming concepts preferred

* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

* Dependable, self-motivated, and willing to learn in a fast-paced environment

* Ability to work effectively both in an office setting and on the manufacturing floor

* Strong communication skills with the ability to serve as a liaison between Programming and Manufacturing teams

* Team-oriented mindset with a positive attitude

* Current enrollment in an Engineering, Manufacturing, CAD/CAM, Industrial Technology, or related program preferred
