Intern – Civil / Environmental Engineering

Job Summary:

The candidate will obtain invaluable hands-on technical experience that won’t be gained in a classroom. The candidate will gain practical experience by working with experienced engineering and technical professionals and participating in challenging engineering projects. Our engineers will help the candidate apply textbook knowledge and create solutions for real engineering challenges.

Examples of technical work to be performed include civil site design (greenfield and retrofit); water resource management planning, design and permitting; flat infrastructure design including utility (gravity and pressure systems) and roadway design; environmental assessments and permitting; minor structural (retaining wall and equipment foundations/pedestals) design.

Specific engineering tasks will vary in nature and complexity and may include but are not limited to supporting development of design engineering documents (plans, specifications and calculations) for facility maintenance and repair projects and new construction. Work may also include supporting development of detailed cost analyses and material take-offs of a variety of building types and site infrastructure throughout the US and other countries.

The candidate will work directly with the Civil Intern Coordinator and operationally reports to the Director of Civil and Environmental Design Operations.

Responsibilities:

Work tasks will vary and require flexibility and desire for diversity in the engineering field. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist our engineering teams in various phases of project development, from concept design to implementation and testing. Support engineering and drafting personnel in creation of deliverables that meet or exceed the customer’s expectations and standards. Identify issues and drive them to resolution through coordination with internal personnel.
  • Work independently but be quick to ask questions and draw upon the best internal resources to meet customer requirements accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive project documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and progress reports.
  • Communicate effectively in person and in writing to keep project teams well informed of pertinent information in a timely manner.
  • Support implementation of Project Management Plans (PMP) and Quality Control (QC) programs as assigned.
  • Communicates design concerns or input to Engineer of Record (EOR) and/or Design Lead and Project Manager.
  • Perform general duties as assigned which may include project research, minor drafting tasks, technical report writing, populating databases, and performing engineering analyses.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Civil and/or Environmental Engineering program at a four-year ABET university or college with preferred targeted graduation date within 1 year (preferred). Will consider candidates who are graduating within 2 years.
  • Must be able to work part-time, maximum 25 hours on average each work week and have reliable transportation. Specific schedule and hours will vary according to candidate school schedule and will be discussed during interview process. During the school breaks, additional work hours may be available.
  • Must have reliable transportation to support office attendance in Merritt Island, Florida.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications
  • Knowledge of ASCE, AWWA, FDEP, ICC, ASTM, and/or UFC codes is a plus.
  • Experience with Civil3D, AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam Revu, or other modeling/drafting software is a plus.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Valid/Unrestricted driver license
  • Verification of US Citizenship required upon hire due to Federal contract compliance.

Compensation:

The expected rate for this role is $22.00 per hour.
