What types of projects does an environmental data science intern typically work on, and how do they contribute to the overall team goals?

Environmental Data Science Interns often work on projects involving the collection, analysis, and visualization of environmental data, such as air or water quality, climate trends, or biodiversity metrics. Interns may assist in developing models to forecast environmental changes or create dashboards that help communicate findings to stakeholders. These tasks support the team's efforts in research, policy-making, or environmental management by providing actionable insights and ensuring data-driven decision-making. These skills ensure that data-driven decisions can be made to address complex environmental challenges.

What is an environmental data science intern?

An Environmental Data Science Intern is a student or recent graduate who assists in analyzing environmental data to address issues such as climate change, pollution, or resource management. They use statistical methods, programming, and data visualization tools to process and interpret large datasets from sources like sensors, satellites, or field surveys. The role often involves working with environmental scientists to support research and inform decision-making. Interns gain hands-on experience in applying data science techniques to real-world environmental challenges, which can help prepare them for future careers in environmental science and analytics.

Job description

Job Number: R0245942
Data Engineer
The Opportunity:
Ever-expanding technology like IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence means that there's more structured and unstructured data available today than ever before. As a data engineer, you know that organizing data can yield pivotal insights when it's gathered from disparate sources. We need an experienced data engineer like you to help our clients find answers in their data to impact important missions, from fraud detection to cancer research to national intelligence.
As a data engineer at Booz Allen, you'll help build advanced technology solutions and implement data engineering activities on some of the most mission-driven projects in the industry. You'll deploy and develop pipelines and platforms that organize and make disparate data meaningful. Here, you'll work with and guide a multi-disciplinary team of analysts, data engineers, developers, and data consumers in a fast-paced, agile environment. You'll use your experience in analytical exploration and data examination while you manage the assessment, design, building, and maintenance of scalable platforms for your clients.
The DoD space is looking for individuals with exceptional software development, data engineering, or data science backgrounds who have done outstanding work utilizing tools such as Foundry, Spark, Python, Qlik, Tableau, and web development frameworks such as React. In short, we are seeking a "full-stack" data engineer who is passionate about building data applications from end to end. This includes data engineering back-ends to building interactive front-ends. For example, on of our offices is leading data analytics efforts of logistics data sets for the US Navy. Moreover, we strive to maintain the very best software and data development practices that our clients trust, we are hoping you pride yourself on writing production quality code and finding the story behind the data!
You'll work closely with clients to understand their questions and needs and then dig into their data-rich environments to put together the pieces of their information puzzle. You'll work side by side with teammates in classified environments and own the development of analytics systems. You'll use a variety of different tools and frameworks to turn sets of disparate data points into meaningful answers to advise our clients as they make informed decisions. Ultimately, you'll bring a deep understanding of data fundamentals to a competitive and challenging data environment to provide the best possible outcomes for our clients.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 3+ years of experience in software development, data science, or data engineering based on impactful industry-oriented data science or full-stack development work
  • 2+ years of experience utilizing Python for data related work leveraging standard libraries such as NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, and PySpark
  • 1+ years of experience building visualization front ends in the form of analytics dashboards or interactive GUI applications such as web apps
  • 1+ years of experience with external customer facing communication regarding technical solutions to a non-technical audience including leadership
  • Experience to break down complex problems into technical solutions based on customer requirements independently
  • Experience with routinely following SDLC best practices
  • Ability to be detail oriented and proactive
  • Ability to articulate and anticipate development risks
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field such as computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, or engineering
