Summary

Spire is seeking an Environmental Engineer or Scientist II to work in Alabama. This position will be responsible for performing field inspections, permitting, waste disposal and remediation to support Spire's pipeline work and ongoing operation of natural gas facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspect Company facilities and projects for compliance with environmental and related regulations; provide recommendations for needed corrective or preventive actions.
  • Perform reviews of projects flagged by Construction Engineering for environmental issues. Train Construction Engineering on environmental review processes.
  • Secure environmental permits and completely required regulatory submittals, especially USACE permits, permits requiring special certifications, and permits with longer timelines.
  • Oversee consultants performing permitting functions. 
  • Manage and arrange disposal of new regulated waste generated by the Company.
  • Manage and/or conduct evaluation and remediation of former manufactured gas plant sites and odorant, petroleum or other remediation and risk mitigation sites.
  • Track and prepare air permitting submittals.
  • Oversee air permitting performed by consultants.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable environmental regulations.
  • Read and interpret applicable environmental regulations, especially state environmental agencies, EPA and OSHA regulations having direct and/or potential impact on Company operations.
  • Assist in preparing regulatory documentation and responses to environmental field incidents and employee questions or requests.
  • Assist with regulated greenhouse gas data collection and reporting.
  • Manage environmental projects. This includes bid proposal preparation, scheduling, oversight and budget tracking.
  • Assist in developing and conducting environmental training.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or similar technical degree, required.
  • Industry certifications - EIT, GRIT, CEP, CHMM, preferred.
Required knowledge, skill and abilities
  • Minimum 2-3 years' professional experience, required.
  • General utility knowledge is preferred.
  • Knowledge of permitting and regulatory environment required (Alabama or Missouri only).
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes.
Physical demands, environment and schedule
  • Shared office environment and field (Ongoing exposure to the elements and rough off-road terrain may occur.)
  • Typically, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Scheduled, periodic on-call duties for incident evaluation and response, as rotated through the department.
  • Overtime and/or travel will occasionally be required.
