Description
The School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan (UM) seeks outstanding applicants for a full-time, nine-month, faculty position. We are particularly interested in promising junior scholars, although applicants at the associate-level, and in some cases full-level, will also be considered. Applicants from underrepresented group are strongly encouraged to apply. We are excited to consider a wide range of areas of specialization, including decision making, conflict management, negotiation, collaborative processes, public engagement, governance, strategic communications, planning, and policy analysis. Substantive areas of interest include but are not limited to climate change, energy, water, and urban sustainability. We are interested in any methodological approach - qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods.
SEAS intends this position to advance environmental behavior, policy, and planning scholarship. Within our professional school, this involves moving beyond understanding environment and sustainability challenges to research that directly informs concrete, innovative, and solution-oriented interventions. A focus not only on theory but also practical procedural and knowledge-based interventions to motivate and enable change is desirable. Applicants should demonstrate promise for developing a nationally and internationally recognized scholarly research program with strong intellectual merit and potential for broader impacts.
This position involves teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level and developing and advising team-based master's student research projects that are responsive to societal problems. Therefore, applicants should demonstrate interest in and capacity for innovative teaching to facilitate collaborative and engaged learning is desirable.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD grounded in behavioral science (e.g., psychology, cognitive science, behavioral economics, sociology, human geography, anthropology, political science, communications), public policy, or planning, or a closely related discipline, with a demonstrated record of productive and impactful scholarly research.
SEAS's mission is to contribute to the protection of the Earth's resources and the achievement of a sustainable and just society. The School contributes new scientific knowledge, visionary leadership, and trained professionals toward that end. SEAS is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and seeks to serve as an inspiration for the next generation of sustainability professionals. The faculty of the School is diverse, with natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, and designers working collaboratively in an integrative setting. A professional school set within a major research university, SEAS provides a model of interdisciplinary and applied research and a focal point of research, teaching and societal engagement on sustainability. The School focuses on key cross-cutting sustainability themes, including climate and energy; water; food, land use and agriculture; conservation and restoration; and cities, the built environment, and mobility.
