What is the difference between Environment Project vs Environment Coordinator?

AspectEnvironment ProjectEnvironment Coordinator

While both roles focus on environmental efforts, the Environment Project leads specific projects from planning to completion, requiring project management expertise. The Environment Coordinator supports these initiatives by coordinating activities and ensuring smooth operations. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right role for their skills and career goals.

What are Environment Projects?

Environment Projects are initiatives or programs designed to protect, restore, or improve the natural environment. These projects can focus on issues such as conservation, pollution reduction, habitat restoration, renewable energy, and climate change mitigation. They often involve research, community engagement, and collaboration with government agencies or NGOs. The primary goal is to promote environmental sustainability and reduce the negative impact of human activities on the planet.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on environment projects, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in environment projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating across diverse stakeholders, adapting to evolving regulations, and managing limited resources. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement are crucial to align goals and expectations. Staying updated on environmental laws and best practices, as well as leveraging project management tools, can help keep projects on track. Building strong multidisciplinary teams also supports problem-solving and innovation throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Project Manager, you need a solid background in environmental science or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as a BSc or MSc. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project), environmental regulations, and certifications such as PMP or LEED are common requirements. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help drive team performance and stakeholder engagement. These skills ensure projects are completed efficiently, compliant with regulations, and have a positive environmental impact.

Job description

Are you ready to lead complex environmental projects that make a real impact?
Why This Role Matters
At ERM, we're not just solving technical challenges-we're shaping sustainable solutions for some of the world's most pressing environmental issues. As a Managing Consultant, Project Manager in the Carolinas, you'll be at the forefront of innovation, guiding clients through regulatory complexity while driving strategies that protect communities and ecosystems.
What Your Impact Is
You'll lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-profile site investigation, risk assessment, and remediation projects under CERCLA, RCRA, and state programs. Your leadership will ensure projects are executed efficiently, safely, and with cutting-edge technologies-helping clients achieve compliance, reduce liabilities, and meet sustainability goals. Beyond technical delivery, you'll build lasting client relationships and mentor the next generation of environmental professionals.
What You'll Bring
Required:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Geology, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in site investigation/remediation under CERCLA, RCRA, and state programs.
  • Proven project management skills with ability to lead teams and manage budgets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare and review technical reports.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • Commitment to health and safety protocols.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) license in NC/SC or reciprocity.
  • Experience with environmental data management tools (e.g., EQuIS).
  • Familiarity with innovative remediation technologies and electronic field data collection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage site investigation and remediation projects involving soil, groundwater, and sediment.
  • Oversee sampling, drilling, well installation, vapor intrusion assessments, and high-resolution site characterization.
  • Interpret environmental data, develop conceptual site models, and prepare technical work plans and reports.
  • Evaluate remedial alternatives and negotiate cost-effective closure strategies with regulatory agencies.
  • Implement and optimize remedies using traditional and emerging technologies.
  • Mentor junior staff and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Prepare proposals, support business development, and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Foster collaboration across ERM's global network of technical experts.
