Job description

Job Title: Quality Inspector
Job Description

The Quality Inspector supports daily operations by performing critical sampling, inspection, and basic testing of spices and seasonings in a production environment. This role ensures product integrity and quality by monitoring critical control points and verifying compliance with regulatory food safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs). The Quality Inspector plays a vital role in identifying deviations, supporting corrective actions, and contributing to continuous improvement in quality manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sampling and basic physical and organoleptic (sensory) testing of spices and seasonings in both laboratory and production environments.
  • Conduct seasoning and batch card reviews to verify accuracy and completeness of production documentation.
  • Ensure accurate label and weight verification of raw materials and finished product packaging on production lines.
  • Monitor and conduct checks of metal detection control points during production to ensure proper function and product safety.
  • Verify correct information and labeling of staged ingredients used in the production of seasoning formulations.
  • Ensure adherence to GMPs, GLPs, and all applicable food safety standards throughout daily activities.
  • Document and report all deviations and non-conformances to operations leads and quality control supervisors in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the work environment, including laboratory and production areas.
  • Perform organoleptic sensory testing to evaluate product appearance, aroma, taste, and texture as required.
  • Carry out visual inspection and quality control checks on in-process and finished products.

  • Support inspection and testing of incoming materials and ingredients as needed.
  • Assist with laboratory preparation, sample handling, and basic chemistry-related tasks as assigned.
  • Participate in inventory and sample management activities related to quality testing.
  • Collaborate with operations and quality teams to support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Perform other duties as requested in support of department and business needs.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in quality inspection, quality control, or quality assurance in a manufacturing or laboratory environment.
  • Ability to perform sample testing, including basic physical and organoleptic (sensory) evaluations.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in documentation, labeling, and data entry.
  • Strong decision-making skills based on training and experience, with the ability to recognize and escalate quality issues.
  • Proactive approach with initiative to follow through on tasks to resolution.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory or food manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear reporting and collaboration.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and data management.
  • Comfort working with quality control inspection tools and processes, including visual inspection and metal detection checks.
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and follow GMPs, GLPs, and food safety standards consistently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in a scientific, food science, or related discipline.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing facility, particularly with spices or seasonings, is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
  • Experience working in laboratory environments, including handling chemicals of varying hazards.
  • Comfort with organoleptic sensory testing, including evaluation of taste, smell, and appearance.
  • Background in basic chemistry, laboratory preparation, or sample receiving and management is beneficial.
  • Experience with data entry and maintaining quality records and documentation.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support multiple facilities or production lines as needed.
Work Environment

This role operates in both manufacturing and laboratory settings. The position involves moderate standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stacking, and lifting throughout the shift. The production environment can be loud and may have varying temperatures, ranging from hot to cold, and often carries strong spice odors and dust. The role also requires working in a laboratory setting with chemicals of varying hazards, following appropriate safety procedures and protocols. The Quality Inspector works around production equipment, metal detection systems, and packaging lines while adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices and sanitation standards. Attire typically includes appropriate personal protective equipment suitable for a food manufacturing and laboratory environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jessup, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
