Job description

About AnimalBiome

Founded in 2016, AnimalBiome is an Oakland-based biotechnology company dedicated to improving the health of cats and dogs through microbiome science. Imbalances in the gut microbiome can contribute to digestive, skin, and metabolic conditions in pets. AnimalBiome analyzes microbial communities and develops evidence-based dietary and microbiome restoration solutions, including fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and novel probiotic formulations.

Our team is passionate about translating cutting-edge science into practical tools that help pets live healthier lives.

About the Position

The Next Generation Probiotic (NGP) Development Lab Assistant will support the manufacturing and testing activities within AnimalBiome’s probiotic production laboratory.

This entry-level role performs a variety of laboratory and production tasks, including capsule production, ingredient preparation, media and buffer preparation, sample handling, microbial culture maintenance, and routine microbiological methods. The Lab Assistant must perform this work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality requirements, and biosafety protocols.

This position is ideal for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in probiotic development, microbiology, and biotechnology manufacturing focused on companion animal health.

Responsibilities

  • Perform probiotic production tasks, including ingredient preparation, mixing, capsule filling, labeling, and packaging, with attention to quality and efficiency.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment in accordance with safety and contamination-prevention requirements.
  • Prepare microbiological media, buffers, reagents, and other laboratory materials in accordance with established procedures.
  • Support routine microbiology activities, sample handling, and culture maintenance.
  • Conduct routine quality-control and stability assessments of probiotic materials under established procedures.
  • Support the maintenance, inventory, and quality control of Animal Biome’s proprietary microbial culture collection.
  • Operate laboratory and production equipment after completing required training.
  • Perform routine equipment cleaning, inspection, and preventive maintenance.
  • Assist with basic equipment troubleshooting under supervision.
  • Accurately document laboratory procedures, observations, results, material usage, and equipment activity using established templates and data management systems.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety requirements and consistently use appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Identify and promptly report deviations, safety concerns, contamination risks, equipment problems, or procedural issues to supervisors.
  • Participate in team projects and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with training on routine laboratory procedures as needed.
  • Adapt to evolving workflows, procedures, and production priorities.
  • Utilize laboratory software and digital tools for data entry, sample tracking, inventory, and documentation.

Working Conditions

  • Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including laboratory coats, gloves, masks, and eye protection.
  • Work in a laboratory environment where biological materials, including live commensal bacteria, are processed.
  • Periodic exposure to strong or distinctive odors associated with biological materials and natural ingredients, such as mushroom extract and microbial biomass.
  • Periods of prolonged standing or sitting while performing laboratory or production tasks.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional flexible or extended work hours to support time-sensitive production or laboratory activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn laboratory databases and data management systems.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace.
  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under deadlines.
  • Ability to follow established procedures while learning new laboratory methods.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to shift between routine tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Basic awareness of laboratory safety, biosafety practices, and environmental requirements.
  • Interest in ethical laboratory practices and sustainability.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Comfort working with biological materials and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to strict biosafety, cleanliness, and PPE protocols.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
  • Ability to stand or sit upright for extended periods during hands-on laboratory work.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced startup environment where responsibilities may evolve.

Required Education & Experience
