Under general supervision, to perform work in the construction maintenance and repair of county roads and to operate a variety of road maintenance or construction equipment; and do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Road Maintenance Worker I
This is the entry-level class in the Road Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties such as patching roads, cutting brush or weeds, and culvert and drainage clearing. Incumbents may operate light or medium trucks and use hand and power tools in their work. On a training or emergency basis, incumbents may operate heavy trucks and equipment and be assigned duties normally assigned to the Road Maintenance Worker II.
Road Maintenance Worker II
This is the journey level position in the Road Maintenance Worker series; incumbents in this class operate a variety of power-driven equipment, such as trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, rollers, and striping machines. A Road Maintenance Worker II may operate some of the equipment normally assigned to the Road Maintenance Worker III class position on an emergency, training or relief basis.
Road Maintenance Worker III
This is the advanced level position in the Road Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents in this class must demonstrate a high degree of skill and independent judgment in operating heavy-duty equipment on a regular basis.
Example of Duties
Road Maintenance Worker I
- Performs a variety of unskilled and semiskilled duties such as patching roads, clearing debris and cleaning ditches and culverts.
- Mixes oil and dirt for road patching and resurfacing; operates a variety of light or medium sized automotive equipment such as trucks and pay loaders.
- Operates jackhammers and chain saws.
- Cuts weeds and assists in repair of cattle guards.
- Acts as a flag person on road repair crews; uses shovels, scythes and other hand tools.
- Assists in the installation and repair of traffic control and warning signs.
Road Maintenance Worker II
- Operates dump and other trucks of all sizes in the hauling of road fill materials for road construction, snow removal, or facility maintenance and repair work.
- Operates tractors with backhoe attachments, striping machines, front end loaders, or other power-driven equipment fabricates, assembles, installs, maintains, replaces and repairs county road traffic control and warning signs.
- Orders and stocks needed materials.
- Builds and paints barricades.
- Performs semiskilled carpentry and concrete work in the construction and maintenance of steel reinforced bridges, culverts, cattle guards, retaining walls, curbs and related structures.
- Builds forms, mixes and pours concrete.
- As required may work in a variety of road or facility maintenance functions such as:
- Patching roads, cutting brush, cleaning culverts or ditches or painting guardrails.
- Care for and services equipment.
Road Maintenance Worker III
- Operates skillfully and within close tolerances, heavy power driven equipment in the maintenance and construction of county roads and bridges.
- Grades roads to proper line and grades.
- Cuts, fills, levels and otherwise prepares roadbed.
- Mixes, spreads and compacts surfacing materials and finishes road surfaces and shoulders to engineering specifications.
- Digs out and installs culverts.
- Removes slides and snow.
- Assists in servicing and checking assigned equipment for needed repairs.
- May operate less complex equipment of necessary.
- May perform skilled and semiskilled carpentry, concrete and fabrication work in the construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts and roads.
- May supervise a work crew in the absence of the Road Maintenance Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Road Maintenance Worker I
Tools, equipment and materials used in road construction and facility maintenance work.
Road Maintenance Worker II
Operation and routine maintenance of road and construction equipment including loaders, trucks, rollers, tractors, compressors and related equipment tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance.
Road Maintenance Worker III
Operation, care, minor adjustment of heavy power-driven road construction and maintenance equipment; operation and capabilities of road construction equipment used in major road and bridge construction and maintenance projects; road construction tools, methods and materials; safe work practices.
Skill and Ability to:
Road Maintenance Worker I
Operate light and medium-sized trucks and wheel tractors; perform heavy manual labor; understand and carry out written and oral directions; work cooperatively with others; speak, read and write English; communicate with and assist members of the public and other facility users.
Road Maintenance Worker II
Skillfully and safety operate light and moderately heavy power equipment; understand and carry out oral and written directions; perform physical labor requiring manual dexterity and agility; detect required mechanical repair work; read, write and communicate at the level required for successful job performance; maintain cooperative working relationships.
Road Maintenance Worker III
Skillfully and safely operate various types of heavy construction or maintenance equipment assigned; perform heavy construction or maintenance work to within close tolerances; judge distances in ground levels and grade stakes; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance; maintain cooperative working relationships.
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Road Maintenance Worker I
One (1) year of responsible experience in road or facility maintenance or general construction work.
Road Maintenance Worker II
Two (2) years of road or facility maintenance and construction experience involving the operation of trucks or other motorized equipment.
Road Maintenance Worker III
Three (3) years of road construction and maintenance experience, including one year of operating heavy trucks or light equipment.
Special Requirements
Possession of a California driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required. A Class A license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is recommended for the Road Maintenance Worker III position.

Boot Allowance: $150 or $175 per year and is distributed once a year, in the first full pay period in the month of December.
Qualifying Classifications: Registered EH Specialists, EH Techs, OSS Engineers, Fleet Manager, Junior Engineer, Mechanic series, Sheriff's Mechanic, Public Works Inspector, Road Maintenance Worker series, Integrated Waste Worker series, AG Techs, and AG Biologists, and Recycling Program Coordinator I/II, Permit Tech I/II, Engineering Tech I/II assigned to the Rock Creek Landfill facility, and Air Pollution Control Tech.
Uniform Allowance: $600 per calendar year split into monthly payments. Payments will be made monthly on the second pay check.

Extra-Hire:
Extra-hire employees are not eligible for step advances, vacation, seniority rights, holiday pay or other certain employee benefits. They are entitled to 24 hours of sick leave per year and eligilbe for the county's CORE Medical plan but not eligible for dental or vision insurance.
Vacation days:
0 - 3 complete years = 80 hours per year.
After 6 months you can take your first week.
3 - 10 complete years = 120 hours per year
10 years+ = 160 per year
Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.
Life Insurance through ReliaStar: $50,000.00 County paid. After 65 years of age, pays out 65%, after 70 years of age ReliaStar pays out 32.5%.
Sick Leave: 12 days annual sick leave accrual with unlimited accumulation.
Sick leave is accrued at 3.69 hours for each full 80 hours of payroll period.
60 hours of sick leave can be used for immediate family, parent spouse, child or sibling.
Merit: After successfully completing twenty-six (26) pay periods, a 3.5% merit increase may be granted. Merit increases may be granted annually thereafter to the top step.
Probation Period: New employees remain in a probationary status for 26 pay periods..
