Job description

General Description This is an entry level position which involves performing routine preventative maintenance on a fleet of heavy equipment, (e.g., refuse packers & recycling trucks, street maintenance equipment, forestry vehicles, etc.). Employees of this class perform basic maintenance functions such as lubricating, pumping fuel, and maintaining appropriate fluid levels of vehicles. They are also required to operate vehicle between its location and the vehicle repair facility

Employees of this class work under general supervision of higher level employees. Individuals in this class may work weekends, holidays, irregular hours or nights. Related work is performed as required.

"CITY RESIDENCY PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED" Typical Work Activities Performs daily preventative maintenance checks and completes preventative maintenance logs; Greases fleet vehicles as specified by the City and the manufacturer; Changes Zerk fittings (grease nozzles) that do not accept grease; Changes filters (oil and air) and strainers when necessary; Checks gas, oil, water, antifreeze and battery levels on all assigned equipment, and fills when necessary; Inspects tires on vehicles for signs of wear and notes observations on inspection/preventative maintenance reports; Changes and repairs minor parts such as light bulbs, hoses, fan belts; Operates any motorized equipment as well as other equipment used in the performance of required duties; Cleans and purges solid waste equipment bodies of debris to make ready for repairs; Performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks as outlined by the equipment manufacturer in the service manual and completes preventive maintenance logs. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED AND One (1) year of experience performing minor repairs, such as repairing and/or installing light bulbs, hoses, fan belts, brake shoes, etc., in a medium or heavy duty equipment/vehicle repair shop. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of NYS Class B Commercial Driver's license, without air brake restriction, at the time of appointment
