Title: Field Sketcher/Design Technician
Location: Windsor Mill, MD 21244
Hire Type: Contract

Position Summary
The Gas Construction As-Built Sketcher is responsible for creating accurate and detailed as-built drawings that reflect the final conditions of natural gas utility construction projects. This role involves hand sketching, measuring distances and depths, documenting fitting types, recording changes from original design plans, and coordinating with on-site construction personnel.
The ideal candidate has 1–3 years of experience in construction documentation, drafting, utility locating, GIS, utility design, or a related field. Strong attention to detail, the ability to interpret engineering plans, and proficiency with CAD software are important for success in this position.
This is an in-person, field-based position with daily travel to multiple project sites. Remote or hybrid work is not available.
Key Responsibilities
  • Drive to multiple project sites each day.
  • Develop accurate as-built drawings based on field measurements, site observations, and construction modifications.
  • Hand sketch and document underground utility installations, including distances, depths, fittings, and other relevant details.
  • Identify and document changes between original design plans and completed construction.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, construction crews, and field personnel to verify dimensions and project details.
  • Update and maintain drawing files to accurately reflect final project conditions.
  • Ensure as-built documentation meets applicable project and client requirements.
  • Utilize MicroStation and other CAD tools to produce accurate, high-quality drawings and sketches.
  • Support project closeout by completing and submitting final as-built documentation within established schedules.
Qualifications
Experience
  • 1–3 years of experience in construction drafting, as-built documentation, utility locating, utility design, GIS, or a related field.
Skills
  • Experience with MicroStation or similar CAD drafting software.
  • Familiarity with active construction sites and field-based work.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and design plans.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to accurately record field measurements and construction information.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with field and office personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with digital field documentation.
  • Familiarity with natural gas or underground utility construction processes and materials.
  • Experience with standard office applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
  • Experience using underground utility locating equipment.
  • Familiarity with utility construction drawings and as-built documentation.
Physical & Field Requirements
  • Ability to travel to and work at multiple construction sites throughout the workday.
  • Ability to perform field measurements and document site conditions.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation.
  • Personal vehicle use is expected.
  • Mileage incurred for business travel is reimbursed at applicable IRS rates.
  • Tolls incurred during business travel are reimbursed at cost.
Work Environment
This position requires regular interaction with active construction sites and field personnel. Candidates must be comfortable working in outdoor environments, navigating varying site conditions, and traveling between multiple project locations each day.
