Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented CAD/CAM Technician to join our team. This versatile role combines CAD design and 3D scanning with hands-on fabrication using 3D printing, CNC machining, plasma cutting, and other advanced manufacturing technologies. You will be responsible for capturing, digitizing, designing, and producing high-quality automotive and industrial parts and components to support prototyping, repair, and production needs.

This position combines 3D scanning, CAD design, reverse engineering, 3D modeling, CNC/CAM, 3D printing, and digital fabrication. The ideal candidate is comfortable working both at a computer and on the manufacturing floor and enjoys taking a physical component from initial measurement or 3D scan through digital modeling and ultimately into a finished, usable part.

The position will work closely with the multiple departments, maintenance, production, and other technical personnel to develop accurate digital models and manufacturing solutions for new, replacement, modified, and prototype components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Capture physical components using 3D scanning and digital measurement equipment.
  • Import, clean, and process 3D scan data and point clouds.
  • Create accurate 3D CAD models from scanned components, measurements, drawings, and existing parts.
  • Perform reverse engineering of existing parts and assemblies.
  • Develop 2D drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing documentation as required.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and/or 3D CAD software to create and modify models and assemblies.
  • Prepare CAD models and files for 3D printing, CNC machining, plasma cutting, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Generate or modify CAM/CNC programs and operate CNC control systems as required.
  • Operate and assist with 3D printers, CNC equipment, plasma cutters, and other digital fabrication equipment.
  • Select appropriate materials, tooling, machine settings, and fabrication methods based on the application.
  • Inspect completed components using calipers, micrometers, gauges, 3D scanning, or other measurement equipment.
  • Compare manufactured parts against CAD models, drawings, and original components to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot discrepancies between scanned data, CAD models, CNC programs, and finished components.
  • Maintain organized digital files, models, drawings, scan data, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Work with other teams within the organization to develop practical solutions to manufacturing and equipment challenges.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Required / Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and mechanical design.
  • Experience with 3D scanning, point clouds, or reverse engineering preferred.
  • Familiarity with CNC machining and/or CNC controls.
  • Familiarity with CAM software and CNC programming preferred.
  • Experience with 3D printing and additive manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience with plasma cutting or other digital fabrication equipment preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with physical components and machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and dimensional accuracy.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine practical solutions.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with engineering and manufacturing personnel.

Education & Experience

A technical degree, certificate, or equivalent experience in CAD, drafting, mechanical design, manufacturing technology, CNC machining, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and hands-on manufacturing experience will be considered.
