Purpose
The City of Savannah is committed to developing our future automotive mechanic workforce. We support a progressive trainee program that will prepare you to become a certified automotive mechanic while working in our Fleet Services Facilities.
As an Automotive Services Mechanic C, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. This is an entry-level position focused on performing basic service and repair work under close supervision. Employees in this role assist higher-level mechanics with preventive maintenance and minor repair tasks on a variety of city vehicles and equipment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Open, close, and update work orders using fleet management software.
  • Ensure that all repairs are completed to manufacturer and departmental specifications.
  • Perform in-field service calls when necessary.
  • Change and repair tires.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems.
  • Perform air conditioning system repairs.
  • Repair hydraulic systems.
  • Repair engines.
  • Repair transmissions.
  • Assist the Master Welder by performing minor to intermediate welding, fabrication, and cutting tasks.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure vehicles operate at industry standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with a minimum of six months of vocational training in automotive or vehicle mechanics and engine repair, and one year of experience in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Some assignments may require a valid state Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving history or must obtain CDL within six months of employment.
Work Schedule: M-F 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Regular contact within the department and other departments, outside agencies, and the general public (supplying or seeking information) on specialized matters.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
