What is an entry level web developer?

Entry level web developers are professionals who are just starting their careers in building, maintaining, and updating websites or web applications. They typically work with front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may also have some experience with back-end technologies or frameworks. These developers often work under the supervision of more experienced developers and are responsible for implementing basic features, fixing bugs, and learning industry best practices. Entry level web developers play an important role in assisting teams with building functional, user-friendly web solutions.

What does an entry-level web developer do?

An entry-level web developer collaborates with a team of junior, mid-level, and senior web developers to code a computer program or web application. You may spend some time shadowing veteran developers until you are comfortable with your company's code base and workflow. As an entry-level developer, your duties include running tests and debugging applications, submitting pull requests with ideas of different approaches to a problem, and pairing programming to develop software solutions to meet business needs. As you gain the skills and knowledge base to understand the company’s systems, you can take on additional responsibilities and more complex assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Web Developer, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, popular frameworks such as React or Angular, and basic knowledge of web development tools are typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and learn quickly in dynamic environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for building functional, responsive websites and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level web developers in their first few months on the job?

Entry level web developers often face challenges such as adapting to new codebases, learning company-specific workflows, and collaborating effectively with more experienced team members. It can be overwhelming to quickly pick up new frameworks or tools that the team uses, especially if they differ from what was taught in school or previous internships. Regular communication with mentors and proactive participation in code reviews can help ease the transition and accelerate skill development.

Can I be an entry level web developer with no experience?

Entry level web developer positions often do not require extensive professional experience and may accept candidates with basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript gained through self-study, courses, or personal projects. Demonstrating a portfolio of work and familiarity with development tools can improve chances of hiring despite limited formal experience.

Is an entry level web developer still in demand?

Entry level web developers are in consistent demand due to ongoing growth in online services and digital presence. Skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular increase employability, and knowledge of responsive design and version control tools such as Git are valuable assets in the job market.

  • Assist with test planning, test case design, test execution, defect tracking, regression testing, and documentation.
  • Perform manual testing of thick-client desktop applications, web applications, and web services/APIs.
  • Review requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical documentation to help ensure testability and completeness.
  • Identify, document, track, and verify software defects using test management and defect tracking tools.
  • Participate in Agile software development activities, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with QA team members, developers, product owners, business analysts, and other stakeholders to validate expected system behavior.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining clear end-user and administrator documentation in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Support automated testing activities at the unit, integration, and end-to-end levels; exposure to tools such as Playwright, Selenium, or Ranorex is preferred.
  • Gain hands-on experience using test management and ALM tools, such as Azure DevOps, OpenText ALM, Jira, Confluence, Redmine, or similar platforms.
  • Apply strong written and verbal communication skills in English to document test results, defects, and QA findings clearly.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Data Science, or a related technical field from an accredited institution. QA-related coursework, certifications, bootcamps, internships, or academic projects are a plus.
  • Zero to three (0-3) years of experience in software quality assurance, software testing, software development, technical support, systems analysis, application support, or a related technical field.
  • Basic understanding of software quality assurance methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Academic, internship, project-based, or early professional exposure to the software development lifecycle.
  • Basic knowledge of test planning, test case development, defect tracking, regression testing, and test execution.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, testing tools, QA processes, and business systems.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder.
  • Only local candidates will be considered.

Any or all of these skills are desired
  • Experience or coursework using collaboration and application lifecycle management tools such as Confluence, Azure DevOps, Jira, Redmine, or similar platforms.
